The Bureau of Land Management has announced that the lease for the Spring Creek coal mine will be auctioned off on 6 October in Montana. The announcement follows an application from the Navajo Transitional Energy Company, LLC, which operates the Spring Creek mine. The Bureau of Land Management has announced several lease sales in recent months, which aim to align with the executive orders put in place by the new administration. Those new executive orders are viewed as necessary to get America on the path to energy independence.

The Spring Creek coal lease auction will take place in October 2025

The Bureau of Land Management announced it would offer the roughly 1,262 acres containing an estimated 167.5 million tons of recoverable federal coal in October, following an application from the Navajo Transitional Energy Company. The sale will be held at 10 a.m. MDT, October 6, 2025, at the BLM Montana State Office in Billings, with sealed bids due by 4:30 p.m., October 3, 2025.

As well as the Spring Creek lease, the BLM announced two additional leases going up for auction soon. The BLM will offer about 120 acres known as the Little Eccles Tract, containing an estimated 1.29 million tons of recoverable coal in Emery County, Utah. As well as two leases covering about 14,050 acres beneath private lands in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The DOI has taken significant steps to offer more leases in the future.
