Germany sees robust demand in newest onshore wind auction

Germany’s wind power industry saw robust demand during the latest auction of onshore wind projects recently. The German nation is among the leaders in the global efforts to transition away from fossil fuels towards a more environmentally friendly energy generation process. Several nations in Europe have seen significantly large bids for massive offshore and onshore wind projects as the global community explores options to reach the decarbonization goals that have been self-imposed.

The German Federal Network Agency reports on the details of the auctions

According to the federal government, the newest round of auctions for onshore wind projects saw significantly oversubscribed bids from potential operators. Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) head Klaus Müller stated that the submitted bid volume of more than 5.7 gigawatts (GW) was the second-highest ever in a German tender.

By the end of the auction for state support for onshore wind projects, 376 bids with a combined volume of 3,448 MW were successful, underscoring the importance that the wind power sector plays in Germany.

Mr Müller noted that the average level of support fell to 6.57 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity. The Federal Network Agency stated that 25 bids had to be excluded from the tender process. He made a statement that outlined the results of the tender process.

The next round of auctions in Germany is a lot closer than you might expect

According to a recent analysis from the industry agency, Fachagentur Wind und Solar, the first half of 2025 saw a record number of applications to build new onshore wind turbines approved by the German government. Both offshore and onshore wind projects have seen significant growth in the past few years, underscored by the recent announcement by the French government that it has approved the sale of a 1.5 GW wind project in Normandy. So despite the efforts of Donald Trump’s administration, wind power will continue to grow and serve the global population for many years to come, as evidenced by the huge number of bids for the German projects. The next tender round for onshore wind will take place on 1 November 2025.
