In a move that aligns with the current state of the digital AI revolution taking place at the moment, Europe is aiming to retrofit aging power plants with digital systems like AI that will boost downstream efficiency across the board. The advancements being made in the AI sector have been truly astonishing as of late, and while the world grapples with the inevitable digital revolution that has reached into nearly every aspect of daily life, the energy sector in Europe is aiming not to be left behind and has plans to retrofit its aging power plants to supplement the increase in energy demand.

The nations of Europe are hoping to jump on board the AI train to boost downstream efficiency

Europe has vast amounts of aging power plants that are reaching the end of their respective ropes. The question facing the nations of Europe is how to modernize the downstream sector by digitizing several operations.

Reports have emerged that state that several European nations are considering transforming old power plants into massive data centers that serve the energy sector’s needs. The modernization of the aging power plants could lead to the biggest tech companies in the world opting to move their substantially large data centers to Europe, with Microsoft and Amazon already showing interest.

The conventional non-renewable energy sector has been subjected to new and innovative ideas that aim to reinvigorate old power plants to become immense data centers capable of handling the recent rise in energy consumption that has been attributed to the rise in AI usage around the world.

“AI has the potential to be more transformative than electricity or fire” – Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google

Europe’s aging power plants could benefit from a digital evolution

The aim for the downstream sector in Europe would be to retrofit these aging power plants with revolutionary digital systems that could simulate conditions and deliver solutions to problems before they arise.

Among the potential benefits that the European power plants could receive are:

  • Advanced sensors that far outpace the current technology on-site
  • Real-time analytics that enable a more precise report of any potential issues that may arise
  • Automated controls that allow technicians on-site to concern themselves with more pressing matters that require a human touch

Europe, along with the rest of the world, has seen a significant increase in energy demand as the AI revolution unfolds. Reports have detailed increases of 20% in regions that have AI data centers, further advancing the calls for the aging power plants to be modernized with digital systems.

As global trade increases, evidenced by several ports in Europe reaching record levels of traffic, the modernization of aging power plants could serve as the best method to increase energy production in Europe. The need to produce higher levels of energy is an exceedingly complex problem, and by retrofitting aging power plants with digital systems to boost downstream efficiency, Europe could solve those complex issues faced by the world.

“AI is going to be the key to understanding and solving many of the world’s most complex problems.” – Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft

The digital evolution of Europe’s aging power plants could potentially revolutionize the energy sector

The global energy sector is working exceedingly hard to produce more power, whether that be via traditional power plants like the aforementioned sites in Europe or via the renewable energy sector. The traditional energy sector has seen several nations rolling back regulatory barriers, aiming to increase production. That stance, alongside the recent reports that Europe plans to boost downstream efficiency by modernizing power plants, could catapult the energy sector into a new world.
