As the world embraces the untapped and unexplored potential of the renewable energy sector, Spain has taken a significant step towards becoming a market leader in the adoption of hydrogen in its mobility sector and energy infrastructure overall. The global energy sector has seen a diverse mixture of renewable energy projects commissioned over the past few years, and hydrogen has emerged as the most practical and viable form of energy that promotes the global energy transition away from fossil fuels.

Spain’s HVR is set to receive millions to integrate hydrogen into the nation’s mobility sector

As Europe embraces the renewable energy sector through a variety of projects that strengthen the energy security and independence of the region, the Official Credit Institute (ICO) of Spain has announced that it is set to allocate €7 million to Hidrógeno Verde Renovable SL (HVR) to construct a myriad of hydrogen filling stations around Spain.

This allocation falls under the framework of the European CEF-AFIF program (Connecting Europe Facility – Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility), which is managed by the European Commission through CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency).

HVR has stated that the funds allocated by the ICO will specifically go to the ACTIVA project, which aims to strengthen the hydrogen infrastructure in Spain and promote initiatives that increase the reputation and practical usage of hydrogen in the nation.

The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) aims to boost hydrogen usage in Spain and further afield.

The TEN-T aims to develop new initiatives for hydrogen in Spain and Europe. Crucially, HVR is set to construct 20 hydrogen filling facilities on existing fuel stations across the nation. This would be a cost-effective manner of integrating hydrogen into Spain’s existing mobility infrastructure. The new hydrogen filling stations will operate on an all-inclusive rental basis for specialized companies aiming to jump into the hydrogen pool.

HVR has become the cornerstone of the Spanish adoption of hydrogen in mobility

The company was formed with a singular purpose: to promote sustainable mobility through a strategically integrated hydrogen fuel system in Spain. In 2023, HVR began its long walk to hydrogen freedom when it launched its first-ever green hydrogen generation, storage, and supply plant in Madrid. This innovative project demonstrates HVR’s technical expertise and commitment to transitioning Spain’s energy sector towards hydrogen.

On top of the €7 million from the ICO, HVR has also received an additional €4.2 million from Europe to boost its plans for a hydrogen fueling system in Spain. Through the allocation of funds, the ICO has exemplified its commitment to shifting the energy sector in Spain towards the renewable energy market through pragmatic projects that align with global decarbonization goals.

Spain has big plans for the integration of hydrogen as a major energy resource

Spain is a member of the new and innovative H2Med project that aims to construct a hydrogen pipeline to foster cross-border transportation of the world’s most exciting energy resource. Enagas has reported that the H2med project is on track and making significant progress to be completed by the end of the decade.

Spain is fast becoming the regional leader in the adoption of hydrogen

The world has become acutely aware of the potential that hydrogen presents. Spain has emerged from the darkness of the traditional energy sector into the light of the hydrogen dream and has even begun talks to acquire a stake in a French energy operator to accelerate the EU hydrogen network. Europe has seen several nations aiming to end the reliance on fossil fuels, especially the import of Russian-made energy resources. The energy market is as fickle as a teenager entering puberty and requires sustained investments in renewable energy to fast-track the transition away from coal and gas.
