With the world consumed by the need to diversify the global energy market, a new champion of the renewable energy sector has emerged, and it might not be the country you have in mind. China has become the leader in the global adoption and embracing of the renewable energy market, driven mostly by the nation’s Five-Year Plan, which calls for increased priority placed on integrating the sector. China leads the world in nearly every aspect of the renewable energy supply chain, with hydrogen serving as the most scalable energy resource in decades.

China’s proclivity for the renewable energy sector has become all too evident

Only a few short decades ago, China did not look anything like it does now. The astonishing technological advancements, alongside the government’s clear proclivity to increase investments in renewable energy, have been a sight to behold.

Now, the Chinese government, as part of its 2026-2030 Five-Year Plan, has outlined the acceleration requirements for the development of the hydrogen value chain in the nation. The government has noted that the aim is to achieve regional self-sufficiency in renewable and clean low-carbon hydrogen.

The nation’s ambitions for the renewable energy market will be supported by the formation of a comprehensive technological innovation scheme that will boost the entire hydrogen value chain in the iconic nation.

China has become the undisputed champion of the global hydrogen sector

In 2024, China cemented its standing in the global hydrogen market as the nation saw total hydrogen production and consumption exceeding 36.5 million metric tons, a landmark achievement for any nation, let alone one with such a complicated and complex permitting system.

At the High-quality Development of Hydrogen Industry forum, a sub-forum of the 2025 International Forum on Energy Transition, organized by the NEA, Liu Deshun, director-general of the National Energy Administration’s science and technology department, noted that China’s dominance in the hydrogen value chain is reaching new heights, thanks in part to the Five-Year Plan being implemented by the government.

China’s use of the hydrogen sector leads the world, according to industry experts

China has undoubtedly become the global leader in the adoption and usage of the hydrogen sector, as noted by several industry experts. At the moment, China accounts for approximately 50% of the renewable energy-based hydrogen production around the world. China’s proclivity for the renewable energy sector is far beyond what any other nation around the world can even contemplate at the moment.

“The Energy Law introduced last year officially included hydrogen in China’s energy management framework, representing the chemical’s huge development potential and scalable application scenarios.” – Bian Guangqi, deputy director-general of the NEA’s science and technology department

According to forecasts by industry leaders and analysts, hydrogen demand could reach hundreds of millions of tons by 2050, with China’s role in the global supply chain being determined by the Five-Year plan.  As Europe lags, some nations are attempting to keep up with China, such as Greece, which recently approved the expansion of an upcoming solar-power green hydrogen complex.

Hydrogen’s role in the global energy market is changing, for the better, we might add

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the known universe and serves as a precursor for life itself. The global embrace of the hydrogen sector is finally gaining momentum following years of stagnation. Europe has seen several nations outlining plans for new and pioneering hydrogen projects, such as Spain, which recently saw advancements in its plans to construct the nation’s largest green hydrogen project to date. China is leading the charge forward for the hydrogen industry, and with global demand set to reach new highs this year, China’s role in the hydrogen value chain is growing.
