In the current climate of the global energy sector, developing projects through strategic partnerships can often be the most pragmatic method to get a project off the ground. In that spirit of international cooperation, Eni, one of Italy’s largest energy companies, and YPF, Argentina’s leading energy company, have signed a preliminary agreement with a division of Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC, XRG, to develop a new LNG project in the South American nation specifically designed for exporting natural gas to the market.
Joint ventures and strategic partnerships have become the norm in today’s energy sector
Many energy companies have specific sectors or projects that they have developed a certain level of expertise in; however, in the current energy market, developing projects alone can often lead to enormous challenges that some companies may find challenging to deal with. That is why major energy projects around the world develop strategic partnerships to move projects forward.
That reality is especially true for the gas sector, as most of the time, the gas needs to be moved across borders to reach its processing destination. In that vein, Eni and YPF have joined forces and welcomed XRG to the Argentine energy table through a new integrated upstream gas project. All three companies have vast experience in the sector, and by joining forces, can develop the project into a reality.
Eni, YPF, and XRG have signed a binding agreement to develop the Argentinian gas pipeline
ARGLNG is Argentina’s latest large-scale integrated upstream and midstream gas development project, which is specifically designed to develop the substantial resources of the Vaca Muerta field. The plan would be to develop the fields for export to the international market, serving up as much as 30 million tonnes of LNG annually in various independent phases by 2030.
The three companies aim to sign a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for ARGLNG
The parties have stated that the plan is to sign a new Joint Development Agreement for the Vac Muerta gas project, enabling each company to bring its specialty to the project. A final technical description was signed between Eni and YPF in October, and with YPF joining the project, the Argentine export of gas is set to reach new heights in the future. This comes as Europe has outlined plans to bring online several new oil and gas ventures this year.
The project involves the processing and all other related phases of gas production for export to the international market. Argentina has been in a financial crisis over the past few years and recently received a massive billion-dollar boost to its economy from US President Donald Trump. The new project will consist of two floating gas liquefaction units (FLNG) with a capacity of 6 MTPA.
“Argentina’s LNG potential is truly transformative. By joining forces with Eni’s world-class FLNG capabilities and YPF’s proven upstream leadership, we aim to set new benchmarks for innovation, scale, and reliability in the international gas market. XRG is committed to delivering sustainable energy solutions that create lasting value for our shareholders, partners and communities.” – Mohamed Al Aryani, President of International Gas, XRG
The global LNG sector has been growing beyond expectations in recent months
The news of XRG joining the Argentine gas projects comes as the global gas market is growing beyond previous expectations. Several exceedingly large energy companies are advancing projects in new and exciting regions of the world, such as Shell, which recently signed off on a Nigerian gas project, marking a turning point for the international gas sector. The global market is shifting from oil production to focus more on advancing the gas sector to reach new heights in the near future.
