The global cooperative nature of the renewable energy market has led to astonishing new initiatives being developed across several of the world’s largest energy markets. The boom of renewable energy projects has reached every corner of the world, with some regions embracing the sector while others stagnate and rely on the traditional energy generation properties of oil and gas. ACWA Power, a Saudi-listed energy company, has recently announced that Indonesia’s renewable ammonia project is heading for a commercial launch this year.

ACWA Power is set to develop the largest green hydrogen facility in Indonesia

The Asian energy market has seen tremendous growth in recent years, especially in the renewable energy sector. The region is dominated by countries with exceedingly high population density that require vast amounts of energy. Seeing as renewable energy requires significantly less land to produce power, the sector is perfect for the litany of nations aiming to increase energy generation in the new year.

ACWA Power has teamed up with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity provider, and PT Pupuk Indonesia to develop a new ammonia project in Indonesia called the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) Project, with Indonesia expecting the project to reach full commissioning this year, marking a new era of hydrogen production in the Asian market.

“Green hydrogen is one of the answers to the energy transition. Therefore, the development of green hydrogen is our focus in efforts to accelerate the energy transition,” – PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo

The pioneering hydrogen project is expected to start operations this year

The companies involved in the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) Project have noted that their expectations are for the project to reach a full-scale commissioning this year. The hydrogen project will run on 600MW of solar and wind power, delivering 150,000 tonnes of green ammonia with a price tag of approximately $1 billion.

“We are honoured to deepen our relationships with the government and government entities of this vibrant, ambitious nation through this new green hydrogen project. As we expand our footprint in Indonesia, we remain committed to supporting sustainable progress, for a greener future for all.” – Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power

ACWA Power is strengthening its presence in the Indonesian energy market following the government awarding the company contracts to develop two floating offshore solar photovoltaic (PV) plants. Green hydrogen projects have become a trend that has encompassed the entire world, with Spain’s 100 MW Puertollano green hydrogen plant coming online last year.

“This collaboration is an extraordinary collaboration. This effort is not only for the benefit of a better environmental future but also to encourage better economic growth in Indonesia in the future.” – President Director of Pupuk Indonesia Rahmad Pribadi

Indonesia’s clean energy ambitions are set to reach new heights this year as the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) Project heads towards a full-scale commissioning in 2026, paving the path towards a new era of green hydrogen production in the Asian nation. ACWA Power has vast experience in the renewable energy sector with operations in several nations.

The calls to diversify the global energy market are producing results

Following the recent G20 Summit hosted for the first time by an African nation, a myriad of nations in attendance reaffirmed their commitments to developing clean energy projects over the coming years in order to meet mandated emission targets agreed to at the Paris Summit in 2016. Indonesia has been accelerating the adoption of the renewable energy market through several pioneering projects, such as the new Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) Project being developed by ACWA Power with the assistance of the Indonesian energy company and government, paving the path towards a new era.
