The United Kingdom is set to boost its clean energy ambitions as the nation recently announced that Plug Power, a market-leading clean energy solutions provider, has been selected to deliver 55 MW of GenEco PEM electrolysers for three new green-hydrogen developments in the nation. Plug Power has become the go-to supplier of essential electrolysers for a litany of hydrogen production projects all over the world, and will now be responsible for the delivery of electrolysers for three hydrogen projects in the UK.
The UK has selected hydrogen as its preferred option to reach net-zero emissions
The United Kingdom has become one of the nations that have heeded the call to decarbonize its energy sector to reach mandated clean energy and emission targets that were agreed to by the vast majority of nations. At the moment, the UK has three hydrogen projects planned for the coming years, namely the Barrow-in-Furness Hydrogen project, the Trafford Green Hydrogen project, and the Langage Green Hydrogen project.
Plug Power has been chosen to deliver the electrolysers for all three projects and builds on the already substantial expertise that Plug Power has displayed in the international hydrogen market. All three projects have been backed by the UK’s Hydrogen Business Model (Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 – HAR1).
“These projects underscore Plug Power’s growing leadership in the European hydrogen market and our ability to deliver scalable, reliable electrolyzers for industrial applications. Through trusted partnerships and government-backed initiatives like HAR1, we’re accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen to help major manufacturers achieve their decarbonization goals.” – Jose Luis Crespo, President and Chief Revenue Officer of Plug Power
Three hydrogen projects in one country, you must be joking
Indeed, the reports are true. The first hydrogen project that Plug Power will deliver electrolysers for is the Barrow-in-Furness hydrogen project, which is being developed by Carlton Power through its joint venture with Schroders Greencoat. The project will consist of six 5 MW Plug Power GenEco Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers delivering a total capacity of 30 MW.
The second project is the Trafford Green Hydrogen project, which is also being developed by Carlton Power in the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in Greater Manchester. Plug Power will supply the necessary electrolysers that will deliver upwards of 15 MW, which has been earmarked for the commercial and industrial sectors in Manchester.
Lastly, Plug Power will supply two 5 MW GenEco PEM electrolysers for the Langage Green Hydrogen project. This particular project has been seen as an industry-leading initiative that will produce hydrogen to decarbonize the industrial market in the United Kingdom. Plug Power’s European hydrogen portfolio is growing at an astonishing rate, having been selected as the preferred supplier for the Sunrhyse project in France.
“This collaboration with Plug Power is a cornerstone of our strategy to deliver reliable, renewable power for UK manufacturers. Partnering with Plug Power ensures we’re combining proven technology with long-term investment and operational expertise. We’re developing projects that sets a new standard for scale, performance, and sustainability in green hydrogen production, and furthering the UK’s industrial decarbonization. – Eric Adams, Hydrogen Director at Carlton Power
Plug Power has become the undisputed king of the hydrogen market
Plug Power’s incredible rise to the top of the proverbial hydrogen mountain has not been an accident. The company has been developing its astonishing electrolysers to supply a litany of nations with the essential components for hydrogen production. Notably, Plug Power has shipped the initial electrolysers for the 100 MW green hydrogen development in Portugal, being developed by Galp. Through the rapid expansion of its hydrogen portfolio, the firm is set to continue to dominate the global electrolyser market for many decades to come.
