Amazon reveals plan for 960 MW small modular nuclear facility in Washington state

France to acquire land for SMR demonstration

As the United States expresses its ambitions to revive the nuclear power sector, a surprising development has emerged. Amazon has become the dominant force in the tech industry with investments that span the length and breadth of the world. Not only are they one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world, but they also serve as a crucial investor in the US nuclear sector. Following the recent outage of Amazon’s substantial web services, it has become clear that the company needs to develop a more reliable service for the global tech sector.

Amazon has invested in a new plan for a 960 MW small modular nuclear facility in Washington state

The nuclear sector in the United States has big plans, as the nation aims to revive the sector to ensure safe and sustainable energy for a variety of sectors. Most importantly, the AI and tech boom in the United States has revealed the less-than-ideal energy market in the nation.

To boost clean energy production, Amazon has announced its plans to invest in the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington. The facility will be built by Energy Northwest with funding provided by Amazon and will consist of 12 modular reactors.

The small modular reactors will be supplied by X-energy, which was granted a substantial investment of $500 million from Amazon. The “modular nature” of the project means that it will require significantly less area than a traditional nuclear facility.

“X-energy’s advanced reactor design, the Xe-100, will be used in Amazon’s partnership with Energy Northwest to develop four SMRs in the first phase of Cascade, with an initial capacity of 320 MW and the option to expand to 12 units with a capacity of 960 MW.” – Statement from Amazon

The project is expected to begin construction by the end of the decade

Amazon has noted that the construction phase is set to begin by the end of 2030, with a targeted completion date of mid-2030s. Amazon has noted that the project will create over 1,000 jobs for locals during the construction phase and an additional 100 permanent positions once operational.

“X-energy and Amazon, along with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Doosan Enerbility, also signed a strategic collaboration agreement in August to accelerate the deployment of new Xe-100 advanced nuclear reactors in the United States to meet increasing power demands by data centers, advanced manufacturing, and electrification.” – Press release by X-energy

As the US nuclear sector has seen a biblical revival that is unprecedented in modern society, Indiana has been selected for a new advanced small modular reactor energy park that will rival the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington, marking the triumphant return of nuclear power in the United States.

“This project isn’t just about new technology; it’s about creating a reliable source of carbon-free energy that will support our growing digital world. I’m excited about the potential of SMRs and the positive impact they will have on both the environment and local communities.” – Kara Hurst, Amazon’s chief sustainability officer

The United States is set to become the market leader in the nuclear power industry

The US’s abrupt U-turn in its perception of nuclear power comes as the current President aims to increase the American energy capacity during his second term in office. Several US states have established advanced initiatives to revive the nuclear sector, and Amazon’s substantial investment in the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington marks a turning point in the American energy adventure. Thanks to the warm embrace of nuclear power in the US, the sector is once again set to dominate the global clean energy market for many years to come, thanks in part to companies like Amazon understanding their role.
