They are not merely assembled overseas; they are mined, refined, processed, and manufactured across an integrated supply chain spanning thousands of miles. This industrial dominance stems from long-term national policy. China spent decades prioritizing raw material refining and factory capacity, whereas Western firms prioritized short-term quarterly profits. Opportunities to establish domestic manufacturing were routinely passed over. Another observer pointed out that foreign manufacturers were once eager to build joint facilities in North America, but those doors closed. As Prowse concluded: “What matters most is who’s actually making the stuff.”
