The solar energy industry has transformed massively over the years because of the freedom that companies have to pursue ambitious projects that would not have been possible in previous generations. One of the biggest changes in the sector is the increased amount of solar generation plus storage facilities that all seek to eliminate intermittency issues and ensure consistent energy availability where generation may not be possible due to weather conditions. With the year now coming to an end, there are many companies that are looking to finish it off on a very high note. Recently, ContourGlobal broke ground on a 509 MW Arizona solar-and-storage project, putting a major new desert energy build into motion.

ContourGlobal seeks to maintain its momentum in project execution

The energy industry evolves at such a rapid pace that it is more important than ever before for companies to capitalize on the momentum that they may be enjoying. ContourGlobal is a leading global independent power producer (IPP) and energy infrastructure company that is focused on low-emissions power generation and battery energy storage.

The company was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The company operates across 17 to 18 countries spanning Europe, Latin America, North America, and Africa. This means it has a high chance of being appointed to spearhead multiple massive projects simultaneously in different places.

ContourGlobal breaks ground on a 509 MW Arizona solar-and-storage project

A recent press release from ContourGlobal announced that the company has recently celebrated the beginning of construction of Project Sterling, a hybrid solar plus storage facility that is located an estimated 20 miles north of Lake Havasu City in Mohave County, Arizona. As the United States continues to diversify the energy portfolio of every state, such initiatives are viewed as necessary.

The plant is expected to combine 509 MWp/450 MWac of solar PV with 360 MW / 1.4 GWh of battery storage across a footprint of more than 2,000 acres in the Mojave Desert, one of the sunniest regions in the United States. The construction process will continue through 2028 and involve an average of roughly 400 workers, making a tangible contribution to the local economy.

Although the main objective for the United States is to meet certain targets, the nation is also enjoying great economic benefits because of massive projects that open up an abundance of opportunities for the general population.

ContourGlobal held a massive ceremony in Topock, which was attended by notable figures such as Antonio Cammisecra, President & CEO of ContourGlobal, Javier Alvarez Canedo, General Manager USA of ContourGlobal, as well as representatives of Arizona state and local institutions, industrial partners, and the community.

Assessing ContourGlobal’s decision to build the project in Arizona

When it comes to the establishment of solar energy facilities, developers have to be strategic and pick a location where sunlight is available throughout the year. During the ceremony, Antonio Cammisecra stated the following:

“Arizona’s sun has been shining on this land for billions of years. Project Sterling will put it to work by turning sunlight into electricity and storing part of that energy for delivery after sunset. Our teams engineered the project around the specific needs of our customer, enabling it to deliver reliable clean power for up to 16 hours a day.”

Understanding how the solar energy sector has transformed over the years

Nowadays, the United States is focused on having standout projects that set new standards for what an energy project entails. ContourGlobal’s ceremony marked the visible beginning of the company’s partnership with Mohave County, the state of Arizona, and its customer Tesla. If the project progresses accordingly, we can expect to witness many more projects between these parties.

ContourGlobal has an operational capacity of 5.7 GW across more than 148 plants. It integrates renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and flexible thermal (natural gas) generation. This makes it highly versatile and, in a position to deliver on a wide range of initiatives.
