Cornell University to lead over 25 events at Climate Week NYC, focusing on AI, nuclear energy, and grid transition

Cornell is sending more than 30 faculty and staff delegates to Climate Week NYC, September 20–27, with over 25 events lined up alongside the United Nations General Assembly. The Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability and the 2030 Project are leading the charge. Cornell’s heavy investment in Climate Week NYC comes down to a gap the university has identified between research and real-world decision-making. Publishing solid science isn’t enough if it doesn’t reach the right people on a practical timeline.

Patrick Beary, the Bruce H. Bailey Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships at Cornell Atkinson, put it plainly: “A university can publish the best science in the world and still not help the leader who has a critical decision to make on Monday.” Showing up in person — alongside companies, investors, and advocates — is how Cornell tries to close that distance.

The topics on Cornell’s agenda reflect where science-based guidance can have near-term impact. Food insecurity, water quality, and climate risk reduction are all on the table. Two Cornell researchers will anchor that panel. Vibha Kalra, the Fred H. Rhodes Professor of Chemical Engineering, and Emily Bernhardt, the Francis J. On the business side, the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business will host sessions on sustainable finance and sustainability in travel, tourism, and hospitality. Andrew Karolyi, the Charles Field Knight Dean of SC Johnson, will co-moderate the finance programming.
