Duke Energy Florida activates second battery microgrid in Trenton, providing backup power to 1,500 customers

Trenton facility upgraded to supply community backup power

The Trenton site isn’t new. It’s been running since 2022, when Duke Energy Florida built the 11-megawatt lithium battery facility to store energy, balance demand, and defer traditional grid infrastructure upgrades. What changed this summer was what the facility can actually do: a targeted upgrade turned it from a grid-support asset into a full community backup power source.

That distinction matters. Before the upgrade, the battery served the broader grid. Now it can directly power roughly 1,500 surrounding customers for up to four hours when an outage hits—the difference between a behind-the-scenes resource and a neighborhood lifeline.

The automatic nature of the process is a genuine advantage, since minimal response time means you might barely notice a disruption before backup power kicks in.

Duke Energy Florida’s first microgrid of this kind was in Micanopy, a small town in neighboring Alachua County. Trenton is the second. The company now has two sites capable of providing localized backup power, along with six battery facilities total operating across the state.

How the microgrid islanding technology works

The core concept here is something called “islanding.” When the battery system detects a grid outage, it automatically disconnects from the main grid and shifts into a self-contained mode, sending power directly to the local customers connected to it. Nobody flips a switch or makes a call. It just happens.

Think of it like a generator, but at a much bigger scale. A standard home generator kicks on when the power goes out and keeps your appliances running—the Trenton facility does the same thing for an entire community of roughly 1,500 customers. The upgrade also fits into Duke Energy Florida’s broader reliability goals for its two million customers statewide. State president Melissa Seixas put it plainly: “This second microgrid in Trenton lets us supply backup power directly to the local community, helping to keep our customers powered when they need it most,” she said, adding that the company aims to make smart grid investments while keeping costs as low as possible.

The Trenton microgrid isn’t a one-off. It’s part of a larger, ongoing push to modernize Florida’s electric grid, and Duke Energy Florida has been moving on several fronts simultaneously.

Over the past five years, the company has upgraded 60% of its wooden transmission poles to stronger materials—structural reinforcement that helps the grid hold up against severe weather, a persistent concern in Florida. Underground infrastructure has been another focus, with about 50% of the distribution system now buried. Shielding lines from storm damage makes them easier to repair when problems do arise, and that’s a significant portion of the network protected from the elements.

The most far-reaching improvement may be the rollout of self-healing grid technology. More than 82% of Duke Energy Florida customers are now served by systems that automatically detect outages and re-route power, with no crew needed to identify and respond first. The company says this technology prevents millions of minutes of outages every year.
