One region of the American energy market has been standing firm in the face of adversity: the Permian Basin. The Permian has long been the cornerstone of the American energy sector, and now, the Eiger Express pipeline expansion is set to increase capacity. The US energy market has been through quite the rollercoaster this past year. Increases in operational costs, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the ever-present danger of the renewable energy market gaining steam have impacted the conventional energy sector in the United States.
The Permian has been the backbone of the US energy sector for many years
The Permian basin is one of the largest natural oil and gas sites in the world and has served as the backbone of the US energy market for a number of years. The American economy has been subjected to an exceedingly challenging state of affairs in recent months. Inflation has been the number one issue for the population, leading to a wave of criticism for the President.
In order to alleviate concerns, President Trump has been on a spree of new energy projects approvals, laying the foundation for a revival of the US energy market, while doing away with the renewable energy progress made under the previous administration. By boosting the conventional energy market in the US, the hope is that new projects will lift the economy to a more stable performance.
Whitewater has noted the planned expansion of the Eiger Express Pipeline
Whitewater, which owns and operates a litany of pipelines in the region, has announced the plan to extend the Eiger Express Pipeline in the Permian basin. The company has partnered with several large energy companies to bring the expansion project to fruition. Now, the project has been developed to reach a new energy transfer level in the near future.
The Eiger Express Pipeline will become the jewel of the Permian basin
The plan announced by Whitewater calls for an expansion of the Eiger Express Pipeline’s maniline capacity to 3.7 Bcf per day with an upgraded 48-inch line. The announcement comes as Whitewater has secured additional firm transportation agreements with several companies operating in the Permian. The project was first announced in August 2025. Since then, the project has grown by leaps and bounds as the US energy market grows.
The new expansion will feature a mainline that has been upsized from a 42″ to a 48″ diameter pipeline, as well as incremental compression being installed. The firm has noted that this will not affect the previously announced completion date that Whitewater expects to be around mid-2028. The Permian will continue to play a vital role in meeting the energy demands in the US sector.
The Eiger Express Pipeline was designed to transport essential energy resources from the Permian Basin in West Texas to the Katy area. The project forms part of a joint venture created by WhiteWater (65%), ONEOK (15%), MPLX (10%), and Enbridge (10%). The expansion comes amid new energy pipelines being planned in the Permian, such as Targa Resources’ planned ‘Speedway’ pipeline.
Other exceedingly large energy projects are being planned in the Permian basin
The expansion of the Eiger Express Pipeline and the Targa Resources Speedway pipeline comes as several other huge US-based energy companies have outlined their own plans for the Permian. Brazos Midstream has announced that it has commissioned the Sundance II gas-processing facility in Martin County, paving the way for the Permian to remain a backbone of the US energy sector for many years to come. Thankfully, the Permian basin has a litany of energy companies that are developing astonishing new projects that will strengthen the region’s energy portfolio.
