The need for increased cobalt sulfate processing has become a call too loud to ignore. Cobalt has become an essential mineral for the world as it serves the lithium-ion battery market, and now, Electra Battery Minerals, a major critical minerals company in the US, has provided a much-needed update on the company’s landmark cobalt sulfate refinery, a first for the North American energy market. The progress made has been a positive step in reducing the reliance on imports of the essential mineral for the lithium-ion battery market.

Lithium-ion batteries: A new form of clean power to advance humanity

The lithium-ion battery market has become a major growth driver for our collective needs. Nearly everything with a battery in it has a lithium-ion battery. That means that your laptop, cellphone, and pretty much any other modern technology device relies on lithium-ion batteries to operate.

The most notable impact that lithium-ion batteries have had has been in the renewable energy sector. The need to decarbonize energy production means that more renewable energy projects that feature significantly large lithium-ion battery storage systems have become a top priority.

As new renewable energy projects are being developed around the world, most of which rely on some form of lithium-ion batteries to store the power generated, certain nations have lamented the lack of lithium-ion battery suppliers on the international stage.

The first-ever cobalt sulfate processing facility in North America is a lot closer than one might think

Electra Battery Materials has provided an update on the company’s latest venture, a purpose-built cobalt sulfate processing facility in the US. Cobalt sulfate is an integral ingredient in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle and tech market, and Electra has plans to develop the first cobalt sulfate processing facility in North America.

“Strong planning and close collaboration with our partners are translating into tangible progress on the ground. We are excited by how the project is coming together and remain fully focused on delivering this important facility efficiently and safely.” – Paolo Toscano, VP Projects and Engineering for Electra Battery Materials

How far has the construction phase progressed at the new cobalt sulfate facility?

Electra has stated that construction crews have completed the necessary installation of exterior pipe racks, which connect the leach plant, crystallizer, and solvent extraction (SX) building.

The crews have also completed several infrastructure developments at the cobalt sulfate processing facility, including:

  • Several new parking areas for employees and visitors
  • additional power services to feed the facility
  • essential construction trailers
  • laydowns and the owner’s team’s office premises

The vast majority of the US energy market expansion has been focused on the conventional natural gas and oil production sector; however, the need for increased battery-grade cobalt has meant that the United States needs to invest heavily in strategic projects that reduce the reliance on imports, such as Electra’s newest cobalt sulfate processing facility.

The new facility aligns with increased government and market focus on developing a more circular energy economy and supply chain in the United States, a necessity amid the ongoing geopolitical dynamics around the world. New refineries have become the norm as the US energy market expands.

The United States has become an expert in developing new refineries

While the Electra refinery will focus on developing a new cobalt refining market in the United States, several US-based energy majors have provided their notable expertise to advance refinery upgrades in some of the most energy-rich nations in the world, exemplifying the expertise that the United States now has in the refinery sector. US refiners are pushing ahead with a new $1.3 billion investment to transform the US refining sector over the coming years.
