In a world dominated by facility closures and cancellations, ensuring a successful venture, especially in the energy industry, has become a rarity and not the norm. Thankfully, some projects are so successful that the operator opens an additional project that is a mirror of the first. Eni, one of Italy’s largest energy companies with a finger in many pies, has announced that it will approve the Coral Norte floating LNG facility in the next few days. The site will be a mirror of the already operating Coral Sul facility in Mozambique.
Mozambique is set to become a major player in the African LNG sector
Mozambique is set to become Africa’s third-largest exporter of LNG once the new facility comes online. The nation has been ensnared in the conflict between the government and a group of radicals; however, that has not stopped Eni from reaching a Final Investment Decision on the Coral Norte facility. The Area 4 project will be a joint venture between Eni, which holds the operator rights, and several other large companies aiming to enter the African energy market.
Eni announced that it would be building a second LNG facility to double LNG production from the deepwater Coral gas field in the East waters off Mozambique, following the success of the first. The 3.55-mpta capacity Coral Norte FLNG will be a twin of its sister facility, called Coral Sul. The first facility started producing LNG in 2022 and has reshaped Mozambique’s energy landscape.
A recent ceremony was held to celebrate the FID for the Coral Norte facility
In October, the leaders of Mozambique’s energy sector, as well as Eni’s CEO, came together to celebrate the signing of the FID. With the world embroiled in a reality of no more Russian energy flowing into the global market, developing new projects that boost domestic production and strengthen energy security for the nations of this world have become paramount.
“Coral North is projected to generate $23 billion in tax revenues and will assign $3 billion in contracts to local companies.” – Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi
The new Coral Notre facility will be a marvel of cooperative energy projects
For any project to be a success, cooperation is key. Rarely does a project reach its full potential when it is designed, constructed, and operated by a single company or entity. To ensure the project reaches its full potential, Eni will be leaning on its partners, much like it did for the Coral Sul facility. The list of partners in the joint venture and their interest in the project is:
- Eni holds a 50% operator interest
- China National Petroleum Company (20%)
- Korea Gas Corporation (10%)
- Mozambican state-owned national oil company ENH (10%)
- ADNOC’s XRG subsidiary (10%)
While the FID has been given, Eni is set to make a decision over the full $2.5-billion engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract in the next few days. The world is seeing more LNG projects being commissioned, and those existing projects are boosting LNG production as the market expands.
The Coral Norte LNG facility will make Mozambique a key driver for Africa’s energy future
The African energy market is expanding beyond what was previously expected, with operations and projects on an exceedingly large scale. Africa is set to welcome some of the largest energy companies in the world. The Coral Norte facility will be a marvel of African engineering and will employ thousands across Mozambique’s expanding energy sector. The Mozambican government gave its approval for the project way back in June, and has since welcomed the plan for a Final Investment Decision and the subsequent construction to kick off soon. Mozambique is reshaping Africa’s energy future.
