A Critical Mineral at a Critical Moment: The Importance of Restoring Domestic Tungsten Production in the U.S.

The Green Energy movement took another blow with U.S farmers rallying to publicize opposition to a wind and solar farm project slated to receive up to $4.9 billion through a loan guarantee made by the former President Biden’s administration. With a primary objective of transmitting electricity from Kansas to the Midwest and eastern cities, the 800-mile Grain Belt Express transmission project is the second largest line in domestic history and is backed by Invenergy, a private company.

According to Invenergy, the new line would gain recognition as a national “energy security backbone” and connect four grid regions, one being PJM Interconnection. Ranked as the largest domestic grid, PJM covers a large portion of the country, including states from Illinois to New Jersey.

With the project promising energy security, it supports the goal of maximizing production output and therefore bolstering President Trump’s “energy dominance” cadence. As a result, the White House touted Invenergy’s $1. A billion-dollar investment is a huge win that helps to shore up the U.S. economy while enhancing national security.

Although the farming industry largely supported President Trump’s run for the 2024 presidential election, a changing mindset might be surfacing. Garret Hawkins, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau, informed Reuters of its opinion on the recent matter, indicating a violation of farmers’ rights because of land acquisition through eminent domain and compulsory acquisition tactics.

Hawkins told Reuters the “sole purpose is to serve its own business interests, and in doing so, profit off the backs of farmers and landowners who have to house their infrastructure for decades to come.”

Hawkins’ statement came in response to a post Senator Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, made on X, indicating he participated in a conversation with President Trump and Chris Wright, the Energy Secretary. He noted Wright said, “he will be putting a stop to the Grain Belt Express green scam.”

Invenergy notified Wright a day later by letter and warned Hawley and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, who has initiated an investigation into the project, have declared “open season on America’s ability to build needed energy infrastructure.” Invenergy furthered its reach by asking Wright to “put his unfounded noise aside and affirm a commitment” to the project.

Although the project has been in process for the past ten years and was bestowed the conditional loan guarantee, the Whitehouse and the new administration did not offer any response. With President Trump’s energy strategy in play, time will tell how federal dollars are allocated and which energy industry projects meet the approval criteria. While energy dominance and independence are at the core of the Trump strategy, green energy still struggles to find support and its place in achieving energy goals.
