Germany has selected two of the world’s leading hydrogen companies to deliver and develop the required compression systems at its Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub, which sits in a former coal-fired power plant. The selection process was an easy one as Hoerbiger and Ariel have vast experience in developing hydrogen projects around the world, and this new hub in Germany could reshape the region’s ambitions to fast-track the progress in adopting the renewable energy sector.

The new Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) exemplifies Germany’s embrace of the renewable energy sector

The world has been forced to deal with the reality that the reliance on conventional energy generation methods has led to significant damage to the environment. As such, many nations are contemplating the best and most efficient form of renewable energy for their needs, whether it be solar, wind, or hydrogen.

For far too long, hydrogen has lagged behind the other renewable resources due to a lack of substantial investment in large-scale projects that drive the sector forward. Now, the German company Kraftanlagen Energies & Services has been contracted to build around the electrolyzer at the new hydrogen facility in Germany, and they have reached out to Hoerbiger and Ariel to deliver the essential compression systems.

Hydrogen has emerged from the dust of the energy transition as the most practical form of large-scale energy production

Hydrogen has long been subjected to a less-than-ideal investment environment, leading to slow progress across the sector. For decades, solar and wind power have been the darlings of the renewable energy sector and have far outpaced the hydrogen potential that is yet to be realized. Germany is aiming to become an exemplary leader in the hydrogen sector, and with the new hub being planned, it can expect that reality to materialize soon.

Hoerbiger and Ariel are set to deliver two compression systems for the German hydrogen project

The two companies will lean on their vast experience to successfully deliver and construct the hydrogen facility in Germany. Hoerbiger has been the technology leader in the efficient and pragmatic implementation of new and advanced systems that drive the hydrogen sector into the new future we have all collectively imagined.

The company has noted that it will deliver three HCP 500 hydrogen compressor packages that utilize Ariel Corporation’s KBH compressor. With a high mass flow of over 250 kg/h, the system is perfect for the German nation’s new and ambitious hydrogen project. The trunkey approach means that setting up the new facility will cost significantly less than expected.

Germany is set to become a hub for advanced hydrogen projects in the near future

Boasting a high degree of standardization, the system is optimized for the lowest total cost of ownership and features some of Hoerbiger’s sector-leading components specifically designed for the hydrogen market. While some of Germany’s closest neighbors have plans to invest millions into hydrogen development, Germany is set to become the spiritual home of the European hydrogen sector.

Europe’s energy transition away from fossil fuels is picking up the pace

The global energy community has heeded the call to end the reliance on traditional oil and gas projects in favor of new and exciting renewable energy schemes that exemplify the new approach to the energy sector. Germany is fast becoming a hub for the hydrogen sector and recently opened its first green hydrogen project that combines hydrogen and wind power. The world has begun to embrace a future without oil and gas, but a reality where those conventional energy resources are completely gone is not achievable. But the news that Germany has accelerated the embrace of the hydrogen sector is a step in the right direction.
