HomeBiogas Secures Breakthrough Contract with U.S. Air Force, Marking Entry into Military Market

The company will supply off-grid waste-to-energy systems for the remote military base.

HomeBiogas, an Israeli waste-to-energy company, has recently announced a significant milestone, securing its first contract with the United States Air Force. This groundbreaking partnership marks a major step forward in sustainable energy solutions for military and defense operations.

Under the agreement, HomeBiogas will supply 20 off-grid toilet systems to be deployed to a remote Pacific Island US Air Force base, demonstrating the technology’s suitability for challenging environments.Bio

The HomeBiogas Bio-Toilet system addresses a pressing need for sustainable human waste management solutions at remote military installations with no sewage connection. Currently, many off-grid US military bases use metal collection tanks for human waste, which are later burned, causing environmental pollution and health concerns from smoke inhalation.toilet2

“While navigating the bureaucratic process took time, this contract represents a meaningful win, not just for HomeBiogas, but for the U.S. Air Force, the future of waste management, and the environment,” said Oshik Efrati, CEO of HomeBiogas. “It validates our mission and opens the door to broader collaboration. Our systems are compact, rapidly deployable, and turn waste into clean energy, making them ideal for remote military operations. This is a major milestone in our growth and impact.”

The HomeBiogas solution is uniquely suited for remote, infrastructure-limited environments. It features a specialized design toilet equipped with a foot-operated pump mechanism that transports the human waste into a biodigester system. Inside the digester, anaerobic bacteria break down the waste, producing methane gas that can be used for cooking or heating water.

Key benefits of the HomeBiogas system include:

  • Sustainability: Converts waste into usable energy instead of creating pollution
  • Water conservation: Uses up to 90% less water than conventional toilets
  • Fast Deployment: Compact, portable, and easy to install in remote areas
  • Off-grid operation: Requires no electricity or sewage infrastructure

HomeBiogas’ technology is already being used in large-scale humanitarian and development initiatives. More than 900 schools in El Salvador have implemented the Bio-Toilet system, replacing hazardous toilet cells and generating clean cooking gas for student meals. Additionally, a new partnership with a Swiss organization will soon bring HomeBiogas systems to rural farmers in Ghana, generating carbon credits for Switzerland.

The HomeBiogas story illustrates how Israeli cleantech innovation can address environmental challenges while creating economic opportunities. As military, defense, and disaster-response sectors worldwide increasingly seek sustainable solutions, HomeBiogas is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for off-grid, eco-friendly waste management infrastructure, turning a disposal problem into a renewable energy resource.
