India set to launch hydrogen-powered train

A new development in India has emerged that promises to shake up the entire energy and mobility market. India is preparing to launch its first-ever hydrogen-powered train that will be fed by a new hydrogen production facility. The project has been identified as strategically important to India as it has the potential to reshape the global mobility and hydrogen markets. Expectations are for India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to officially launch the project later in January.

India’s newest hydrogen production facility has been created to power the hydrogen train

India has been working diligently to advance the embrace and adoption of the renewable energy sector through several projects that are strategically important to the nation’s energy market. According to state officials, the newest hydrogen production facility has been created to provide the necessary hydrogen to power India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered train.

The hydrogen train project, which is being developed by Northern Railway, is set to operate on the existing Jind–Sonipat route and is now nearing completion, according to reports and statements from the government.

A stable and reliable flow of hydrogen has been established via a new hydrogen production facility in the province of Jind, which will fuel the hydrogen train during commercial and regular operations once completed.

The Haryana regional government has noted that its Chief Secretary, Anurag Rastogi, conducted an extensive review of the power arrangements for the project as part of a hybrid meeting with officials from Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam. In that hybrid meeting, the focus was on the current supply status for the hydrogen train as well as backup systems and other associated infrastructure developments.

“I believe that water will one day be employed as fuel, that hydrogen and oxygen which constitute it, used singly or together, will furnish an inexhaustible source of heat and light, of an intensity of which coal is not capable.” – Jules Verne

India has now commissioned its largest-ever hydrogen production plant

To provide the ground-breaking hydrogen-powered train with the essential hydrogen it needs, India has commissioned its largest-ever hydrogen production facility. The plant will be capable of storing at least 3,000 kg of hydrogen earmarked for the train.

Notably, the facility has been designed to operate on a continuous basis, constantly producing more hydrogen to power the new train. The hydrogen produced during the electrolysis process will power what Indian Railways calls the world’s most powerful hydrogen train set deployed on a broad-gauge network.

During a recent review of operations, power utility officials stated that the facility has been receiving a stable electricity supply, leading to officials from Northern Railway praising the development of the hydrogen gas facility, which is estimated to cost an initial investment of around $14.4 million.

With recent market data revealing that the global hydrogen project pipeline has surpassed 1,500 projects, the new hydrogen-powered train could provide the basis for similar ventures in the Indian railway sector over the coming years, according to regional and state officials.

“Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, and has the potential to become an inexpensive source of energy for neighborhoods, light and heavy duty vehicles, and industry.” – Charlie Dent

The hydrogen production market is set to reach new heights in 2026

Building on the tremendous, ground-breaking achievement by the Indian officials in advancing the use of hydrogen as a fuel source, new reports have painted a pretty picture for the global hydrogen sector. Europe is set to see its hydrogen market boosted by a recent commitment by Poland to invest over half a billion euros in several new hydrogen projects. With the ever-present need to diversify energy output across the market, the world is set to welcome a new era of hydrogen production.
