The global revival of the nuclear energy sector has been boosted by the news that Iran has completed the installation of the third tier at the Bushehr-2 nuclear reactor this month. Iran has been swept up in recent protests by locals over the sky-high cost of living, leading to waves of protesters in the streets. The nation is one of only a select few that are still doing business with Russia and its energy companies, which have provided the necessary units for the Bushehr-2 nuclear reactor.
Iran is advancing its newest nuclear energy project this year
The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran has noted that the third tier of the inner containment building at the second unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant has been successfully installed, despite several delays and issues securing the necessary components. The reality is that Iran is aiming to use its nuclear know-how to develop a new era of clean energy production that does not rely on imports of essential energy resources.
The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran has stated that the 12 sections that make up the third tier have now been installed without any notable issues, and that the installation was completed by domestic experts despite some less-than-ideal weather conditions.
The next step, according to the AEOI, is for the works to begin on welding and connecting said sections. By installing the third tier, the height of the inner containment building has risen to 40 metres. The AEOI has stated that the fourth tier is expected to be installed sometime this year.
Iran has seen protests in the streets by locals, increasing tensions over the cost of living
The government has been clamping down on a wave of new protests by locals that have seen thousands of people lining the streets to make their voices heard. Reports from major news outlets like CNN and MS Now have stated that up to 30 people have been killed by government forces.
The situation has become as tense as can be with the United States President, Donald Trump, stating that if Iran kills any protesters, the US would take immediate military action against Iran. Despite the current situation, Iran is progressing with its nuclear energy project, which is all it can do at the moment, following the closure of its nuclear weapons program to alleviate concerns by the international community.
The development of the Bushehr nuclear plant has been a long time coming
Iran has been developing the Bushehr nuclear facility for well over 15 years now, with the first units installed during 2011. The first unit at the facility, which sits on the edge of the Persian Gulf, was connected to Iran’s national grid in 2011 following the successful installation of a Russian-designed VVER unit, which boasts a capacity of 915 MWe.
At the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in 2024, Iranian officials noted the expectation is for the unit to be fully operational by 2029. According to the Russian energy major, Rosatom, Unit 3 for the project is currently being constructed.
Wth China advancing its nuclear energy sector through up to ten new developments, Iran signed a memorandum of understanding with Rosatom to construct several new nuclear reactors in the Middle Eastern nation, marking the revival of the nation’s nuclear energy program.
The revival of the nuclear energy sector has reached every corner of the world
Iran is not the only country that is planning a significant revival of the nuclear energy sector. The United States has expressed similar ambitions to develop its nuclear energy market, and has recently seen Duke Energy submit plans for a new nuclear power facility in North Carolina. The global energy market is shifting towards decarbonizing the energy sector through the promotion and production of clean energy.
