In yet another display of countries collaborating to generate renewable energy, the UK-based company ITM Power recently won front-end engineering roles on green hydrogen development in Australia and Canada. The massive operation entails about 70MW of green hydrogen capacity, which will unquestionably benefit the country’s citizens.
An overview: Green hydrogen coming to Australia and Canada
There has been a lot of movement in the energy industry of both Australia and Canada in 2026, which has created a lot of excitement among its citizens. Nowadays, technological innovation and efficient management systems allow countries to pursue multiple projects simultaneously, which is beneficial in the end because countries can reap the rewards from them all at once. ITM Power’s victory did not come easy because there are many corporations that are actively seeking to pursue energy-related projects in different countries and increase their name value.
In Australia, ITM Power won a Basic Design Engineering Package (BDEP) and a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract in Canada. This is a considerable achievement for the company’s NEPTUNE V, and most importantly, it is a massive gain for the environment because both Canada and Australia will decrease their reliance on fossil fuels when the green hydrogen plans materialize. Dennis Schulz, the CEO of ITM Power, stated, “We are excited to be working with our customers on these projects, and to advance the deployment of our NEPTUNE V product into the Australian and Canadian markets.” The company already has a good reputation for how it executes large-scale energy products and has two more opportunities to solidify its name further while increasing its overall portfolio.
The future of Australia is in safe hands: Basic Design Engineering Package (BDEP)
Interestingly, ITM Power refrained from mentioning the industrial customer that awarded it the much-talked-about BDEP in Australia. There could be many reasons for this, such as the project not yet being in its final stages and the customer waiting for it to arrive there. The BDEP stage is one that usually covers early engineering-related details such as the layout design, integration planning, and the specific equipment to be used. The primary purpose behind it is to allow ITM Power to determine its solutions during the early development stages instead of waiting until it’s too late. The Asia-Pacific region is a standout market in the hydrogen generation scene, meaning there are many large-scale renewable energy projects that are being pursued in the current landscape.
Canada’s Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract
ITM Power’s Canada project is different from Australia’s because it involves providing certain services for a green hydrogen-producing operation in the transport department. In a nutshell, Canada intends to utilize its hydroelectric energy foundation to produce hydrogen that will be used in fuel cell vehicles. The transport industry has received criticism for many generations for its contribution to carbon emissions, which are affecting the longevity of the environment. FEED is also different from BDEP because it contains more sophisticated engineering.
Introducing NEPTUNE V, ITM Power’s new system
Although the Canadian and Australian developments are dissimilar, the commonality between the two is that they both rely on the NEPTUNE V containerised electrolyser platform. The NEPTUNE V is a green hydrogen-generating system that can be used on different project scales and customer types.
ITM Power will be pleased to have secured the contract wins, considering that the hydrogen climate is at its peak right now. Many countries have an ambition to reach net-zero emissions, meaning they are inclined to reduce carbon emissions for their own sake and also for the environment. ITM Power is already highly active in the scene, for instance, in November 2025, it won another contract to facilitate a large-scale 710 MW hydrogen project in Germany.
