KBR lands the front-end engineering job for a 250 MW Nebraska project designed to turn renewable hydrogen into e-methane

One of the biggest aims for the United States during the clean energy transition is to diversify the energy portfolio of every state and ensure that there is a consistent availability of clean energy. This explains the wide range of projects that have emerged in the nation during the transition, as developers are seeing an opportunity to generate revenue. At the same time, it’s still highly possible for them to do so. Recently, KBR landed the front-end engineering job for a 250 MW Nebraska project designed to turn renewable hydrogen into e-methane.

KBR lands the front-end engineering job for a 250 MW Nebraska project

A recent press release from KBR revealed that the company has been selected by the Live Oak consortium to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the proposed Live Oak project in Norfolk, Nebraska. It is much harder for companies to be selected as providers of a certain service in the energy industry, considering the high competition that exists and the access to resources that many companies have.

As such, KBR deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the selection it has received ahead of many other companies. The Live Oak consortium is an international partnership that consists of TotalEnergies, Osaka Gas, Toho Gas, ITOCHU Corporation, and Tree Energy Solutions (TES). The project reflects a massive step forward in the development of large-scale electric natural gas (e-NG), also known as e-methane, production in the United States.

There is still a decision to be made regarding the Final Investment Decision in 2027, and after that, the project can be expected to commence commercial operations by 2030, with plans to export e-NG to Japan.

Analyzing how KBR aims to take advantage of the huge selection received

Although KBR can be excited about the selection, the responsibility still lies with the company to deliver and justify why it was selected ahead of many other companies. The company will execute the FEED scope for the facility, which is expected to produce e-NG using renewable hydrogen generated through roughly 250 MW of water electrolysis and biogenic carbon dioxide.

The hydrogen and captured biogenic CO₂ will be combined to produce synthetic methane, supporting the ever-increasing demand for lower-carbon energy solutions.
