The resurgence of the wind power sector across the global energy market has reached new heights with SSE and FuturEnergy selecting German turbine manufacturer Nordex to construct, install, and maintain wind turbines for a 60 MW wind project in Ireland. The region has seen the government advancing initiatives to grow the wind power sector, and through the new deal with Nordex, the Irish wind power market is set to become a dominant force in the region’s energy market.

Wind power projects have become immensely popular in Europe

Several European nations have revived their wind power ambitions in recent years amid calls to diversify the global energy market. Wind power’s potential to deliver large-scale energy projects is commendable, add to that the clean energy and emission reduction properties, and one questions why more nations are not turning to the wind sector.

The climate in Europe is perfect for wind power projects, almost as if the region were designed to make use of the wind that is a constant feature, especially in places like Ireland. The government has been fostering investments in wind power, with Nordex playing a vital role in supplying wind turbines for the UK energy market in recent years.

Nordex will supply up to 12 wind turbines for the Irish wind project

The German wind turbine manufacturer has an immensely impressive portfolio in the wind sector, providing turbines for a litany of projects not only in Europe, but further afield as well. Nordex will supply 12 N133/4.8 wind turbines at the Drumnahough Wind Farm in Donegal, Ireland, continuing its presence in the UK energy market for many years to come.

The Drumnahough project is just the latest in a long relationship between SSE and Nordex

The new Drumnahough project is just the latest for the long-standing relationship between SSE Renewables and Nordex, with the German manufacturer already supplying 29 turbines for the 101MW Yellow River wind farm in Offaly, Ireland. Additionally, the pair of companies recently announced a new order for wind turbines for a wind project in Spain.

“We’re pleased to have been awarded the contract to manufacture and install turbines for the Drumnahough Wind Farm – another important milestone in Ireland’s renewable energy journey. With the N133’s suitability for high wind locations and our long-term service commitment, at Nordex, we’re proud to continue to deliver as a trusted, dependable partner in the Irish onshore sector.” – Jason Welch, Managing Director UK & Ireland at the Nordex Group

Nordex will not only construct and install the 12 wind turbines at the Drumnahough project, but will also continue to provide substantial maintenance for the project as part of a long-term Premium Service agreement. The company has become the backbone of the international wind sector, and recently received an order for wind turbines for a wind project in Germany, exemplifying the company’s expertise in turbine manufacturing.

Once construction has been completed and the Drumnahough project is operational, it will potentially provide enough electricity to cover the power consumption of around 40,000 homes.

Nordex’s dominance in the European wind power market has become all too real

The firm boasts an impressive portfolio, with operations in several countries around the world, including projects in Germany, Spain, Brazil, India, and the USA. Nordex and SSE recently revealed their plans to develop 2 MW of new wind capacity in Spain, exemplifying the firms’ dominance in the European wind power market. The European proclivity for wind power has not been shared by the US, as the sector has all but vanished due to the current President’s expressed disdain for wind power overall. Regardless, the Irish wind project is moving full steam ahead with Nordex leading the way.
