In today’s crazy world, finding and developing new and innovative energy resources is essential in meeting demand. The renewable energy sector has gained significant momentum in recent years, and now OAPEC, or the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries, has launched a regional program that aims to boost low-carbon hydrogen development across the world through strategic investments in crucial hydrogen projects. The Arab nations of the world are mostly desert regions that have significant natural resources, which the OAPEC now plans to turn into hydrogen hubs.

OAPEC aims to boost hydrogen development among its 11 member states

For far too long, the Arab nations of the world have relied on oil and gas to provide energy for their populations, with countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates becoming global energy sector players and supplying the world with essential oil and gas, bringing their GDPs to astonishing levels, enriching their nations and populace substantially.

Now, the Arab nations that form the OAPEC have turned their attention to the untapped and often overlooked potential that hydrogen has stored away in abundance. At the recent Awabec Annual Seminar on “Global and Arab Hydrogen Developments: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities” in Egypt, the OAPEC unveiled a new initiative that aims to boost the standing and investments in hydrogen across its member states.

The ABEC Hydrogen Guidance Initiative (ArabH2) has been established by the OAPEC

The summit that brought together several key players in the Arab world saw the launch of the ABEC Hydrogen Guidance Initiative. The program aims to boost both blue and green hydrogen production among the member states. The summit saw over 11 speakers and nearly 110 energy experts and scientists in attendance.

The initiative has five main pillars that it hopes will drive hydrogen production

The summit brought together the best and brightest minds who all have the same goal: to decarbonize the global energy sector through the usage and promotion of hydrogen as a viable energy resource in place of fossil fuels. Which is a bit odd coming from a region of the world that gained its riches from oil and gas, but we digress. The energy landscape is shifting towards the renewable energy sector, like it or not.

The energy and government leaders in attendance noted the five main pillars of the initiative are:

  1. Strengthening regional and international cooperation through knowledge exchange and expertise
  2. Promote scientific research and analysis of the hydrogen sector
  3. Support the member states’ ambitions of renewable energy integration
  4. Overcome significant investment and technical challenges that have hampered hydrogen production up until now
  5. Support national capabilities and vocational training programs for hydrogen

As the Arab nations of the world have begun to embrace the potential that hydrogen has presented to the international energy community, some nations have placed all their chips on the hydrogen sector. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has become an exemplar of how to use hydrogen in the future, with its innovative NEOM 4 GW green hydrogen hub.

Like it or not, hydrogen is set to become the energy resource for the world of tomorrow

The initiative launched by OAPEC is a sign of the transitional nature of the global energy sector at the moment. The end of the conventional energy sector has been accelerated by the ever-present danger of climate change. Just take a look at the devastating wildfires consuming California as an example of how climate change needs to be addressed. With Saudi Arabia’s massive green hydrogen facility set for a 2026 startup, the Arab nations of the world can once again become leaders in the energy sector through pioneering initiatives like the one outlined recently in Egypt.
