Instead, developers have to seek regions with favorable conditions that will allow them to generate energy consistently. Among the entities aiming to rejuvenate the U.S. wind landscape is Pattern Energy, which has now moved forward with wind developments tied to new transmission capacity in the western United States.

A lot of events that have unfolded in the American wind energy sector have discouraged developers from establishing initiatives. For instance, news broke that U.S. federal authorities have concluded the cancellation process for offshore wind lease areas in New York and Carolina Long Bay. Nevertheless, Pattern Energy has remained committed to executing projects.

At the heart of its strategy is the SunZia Wind and Transmission project, which is one of the most ambitious clean energy developments in U.S. history. The overall aim of the initiative is to unlock stranded wind resources in New Mexico and deliver power to high-demand markets across the Southwest.

Understanding how integrated infrastructure is effective in expanding wind capacity

According to reports, construction of the facility is officially underway, which means we are a step closer to witnessing a major shift in how renewable energy is produced and delivered across state lines. Pattern Energy’s flagship SunZia project combines a massive onshore wind farm with a dedicated high-voltage transmission line, addressing one of the biggest challenges in renewable energy, which is grid connectivity.

The inclusion of technology in the energy industry has opened the door for developers to execute their most ambitious ideas. This specific wind facility is expected to reach approximately 3,500 megawatts (MW) of capacity. Statistically speaking, this makes it the largest onshore wind project in the Western Hemisphere.

SunZia manages to stand out from the rest of its competitors because of its integrated design. The project includes a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line of approximately 550 miles that will transport electricity from wind-rich regions in New Mexico to population centers in Arizona and California.

Pushing boundaries: Assessing Pattern Energy’s quest to transform the wind sector

The United States is in a unique position, whereby every initiative has to play a part in finding solutions for the issues that previous developers have faced. The approach utilized by Pattern Energy allows it to overcome one of the most noticeable issues in the sector, which is the abundance of renewable resources that are located far from urban demand centers.

By combining generation and transmission, the company guarantees that clean energy can reach the grid efficiently and reliably.

Unpacking the overall impacts of the wind development tied to a transmission line

The western United States is a region that has, for a long time, been respected for its strong wind potential, especially in states like New Mexico. However, limited transmission capacity has played a part in hindering development. As such, SunZia intends to change that dynamic by enabling large-scale energy exports to neighboring states.

Once operational, the project is expected to supply electricity to up to three million American households. Pattern Energy has already shown its ability to scale wind development through projects like Western Spirit Wind, a 1,051 MW installation in New Mexico. Pattern Energy estimates total economic impacts of more than $20 billion. This will ultimately strengthen the U.S.
