PEL 93 joint venture applies for second exploration renewal in Namibia’s Owambo Basin, commits to drilling at least one well

The JV has proposed a minimum expenditure commitment of US$10 million across the renewal period. A key catalyst behind the renewal push is what’s been happening about 62 miles to the east. ReconAfrica’s Kavango West 1X well — located within the same Owambo Basin and Damara Fold Belt play — has produced hydrocarbons at surface from two separate formations, drawing attention across the basin.
On July 16, 2026, ReconAfrica reported preliminary results from production testing of the Elandshoek Formation. The uppermost test zone successfully flowed natural gas to surface across three separate flow tests. Then on August 17, 2026, the company confirmed hydrocarbon flow from the upper Huttenberg Formation, establishing a second productive reservoir interval and completing the vertical production testing phase.
ReconAfrica has since elected to move to an open-hole horizontal production test, targeting up to 3,280 feet of horizontal section within the Huttenberg Formation. That program is still advancing.
Kavango West 1X results reduce exploration risk at PEL 93
Those flow results matter well beyond ReconAfrica’s own acreage. For the PEL 93 JV, they provide regional evidence of an active petroleum system operating within the Damara Fold Belt — the same geological framework that underlies PEL 93.
Demonstrating that hydrocarbons have been generated and have migrated within this system directly supports the prospectivity of PEL 93. It reduces what geologists call charge risk — the uncertainty over whether source rocks have actually produced hydrocarbons and whether those hydrocarbons have moved into potential traps.
The JV has also been building its own dataset. Roughly 3,728 line-miles of airborne gravity, magnetic, and radiometric data have been completed, materially improving structural definition across the license area. The principal target is the Otavi carbonate sequence — the same formation where ReconAfrica has declared a discovery — with secondary objectives in the Kombat sandstone.
