The Asian continent has developed a reputation for its captivating solar energy initiatives. Still, the United States deserves tremendous credit for the way that it continues to compete with China in solar energy projects. One of the key advantages that the U.S. has is that it possesses wealth, resources, and the expertise to produce groundbreaking projects that set the blueprint for other nations. There is also a massive number of domestic companies that have shown a commitment to pursuing projects, investing millions of dollars. Among the entities is Pivot Energy, which recently backed a workforce development initiative to prepare Chicago workers for careers in the solar industry.

A background overview of Pivot Energy and its position in the solar industry

Pivot Energy is a national renewable energy provider and independent power producer that was founded in 2009. It develops, owns, and operates solar and energy storage projects. Despite the company being fairly new to the energy industry, it has established itself as a reliable player in enhancing local economies, creating jobs, and providing affordable power for businesses and communities across the U.S.

The solar industry used to face great criticism because developers were investing millions of dollars in energy projects that were dictated by the availability of sunlight, when there is no way to guarantee its consistent availability. However, nowadays, developers establish battery storage facilities and other scientific methods to enhance solar.

Pivot Energy has 64 Illinois-based solar projects that are either under construction or are operational. Altogether, they reach a capacity of 213 MW. As of 2026, the company is working on extending its presence within a variety of states and diversifying its portfolio.

Pivot Energy backs a workforce development initiative focused on Chicago workers

HIRE360, an Illinois-based workforce development non-profit, collaborated with Pivot Energy in recent years and in 2026 celebrated the graduation of the Pivot Program Cohort 1, a workforce development initiative that assists people preparing for construction careers on clean energy projects.

Pivot donated $180,000 for the training program and partnered with HIRE360 to facilitate a 240-hour Solar Workforce Bootcamp Training Program in Chicago for 10 people. When companies decide to partner for an energy initiative, they are hoping to complement each other and share the financial responsibility as well as the risks associated with the initiative.

In this instance, the Bootcamp concluded on July 9. One of the most important elements of project execution is possessing a competent workforce that will allow companies to meet all their targets.

Breaking down the exact features of the Pivot Energy and HIRE360 program

According to reports, the designed program consisted of a 160-hour comprehensive pre-apprenticeship curriculum approved by North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) with an 80-hour PV Associate Boot Camp established and brought by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA).

The U.S. solar energy industry is set to benefit massively from the two entities collaborating because this is not just a one-off project. Pivot Energy and HIRE360 are prepared to continue the workforce training partnership all the way into 2027, with yet another 10-person cohort in the works.

Looking ahead: Pivot Energy establishes a blueprint for workforce development

Many entities can learn from the strategy adopted by Pivot Energy in preparing workers to become experts in building solar facilities. Jay Rowell, Executive Director of HIRE360, stated the following:

“These graduates have put in the work, developed valuable skills, and are ready to help build Chicago’s future on projects that harness clean energy. We’re grateful to Pivot Energy for investing in this program, and we look forward to seeing the impact these graduates will make in our communities throughout their careers.”

HIRE360 was the perfect entity for Pivot Energy to partner with, considering that it has a proven history of connecting people from underrepresented communities to careers in the union construction and clean energy trades through workforce training, pre-apprenticeship programs, and employer partnerships.
