Italy breaks ground on coastal hydrogen hub featuring a 5 MW electrolyzer

Lhyfe opens Germany’s largest commercial green hydrogen facility in Baden-Württemberg

The global transition of the energy sector away from the harmful fossil fuel-based energy generation towards the renewable energy sector is reaching a tipping point, with several nations turning to the untapped potential of the hydrogen sector, some for the first time. Now, Plug Power, a major US-based hydrogen company with operations around the world, has revealed it has started the installation process of its 5 MW electrolyzer for the H2 Hollandia project in the Netherlands, marking a turning point in the Dutch energy ambitions.

The love affair between hydrogen and solar power has reached the Netherlands

Several energy-rich nations around the globe are developing pioneering projects that combine the hydrogen sector with the powerful solar power sector, leading to an energy love affair that exceeds cooperative expectations for the renewable energy market. The market-leading technology that Plug Power demonstrates has led the company to become one of the largest and most profitable energy firms in the world.

The plan will be for Plug Power to install a 5 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser at the new green hydrogen facility in the village of Nieuw-Buinen, which is in the northeast of the Netherlands. The new hydrogen facility will source all its electricity from the adjacent 115MW Vloeivelden solar park. This cooperative energy project sets the nation up to become a regional leader in the renewable energy market.

“The electrolyzer at H2 Hollandia produces green hydrogen without placing any additional burden on the electricity grid, Because the system is directly connected to the adjacent solar farm, it can convert surplus solar generation, energy that would otherwise be curtailed, into hydrogen that can be stored and distributed for use in transport and industry.” – Plug Power statement on its website

The project exemplifies Plug Power’s expertise and presence in the nation

The H2 Hollandia project brings the dream of green hydrogen production in the Netherlands into reality. With Plug Power’s demonstrable expertise in the hydrogen sector, reports from industry experts note that the regional government is behind the project, although no price tag has been revealed despite questions from the press.

The project is being developed by green energy developer Novar and international contractor Avitec, and once it gets off the ground and begins operations in 2026, will deliver up to 300 tonnes of green H2 annually. Once construction has been completed and the project can actually begin operations, it will be the first operational electrolyzer hydrogen hub in the Netherlands.

Europe’s proclivity for the hydrogen production sector has reached new heights in recent months, as evidenced by Greece approving expansion plans for a solar-powered green hydrogen complex.

“H2 Hollandia is a powerful example of how renewable energy and hydrogen production can be seamlessly integrated at scale,“The project demonstrates how Plug’s electrolyzer technology can help relieve grid congestion, strengthen energy resilience, and accelerate industrial decarbonization. This project is an important step in our broader European expansion, as we continue deploying commercial-scale systems that make clean hydrogen production both practical and scalable.” – Plug Power’s chief revenue officer Jose Luis Crespo

Several European nations are advancing the hydrogen sector through new projects

The Netherlands is not the only European nation with lofty ambitions for the hydrogen sector, with Möeve preparing to break ground on what will become Spain’s largest green hydrogen project. The European sentiment over the hydrogen sector is shifting. Many nations have imposed clean energy and emission targets for the years to come, and through pioneering projects in the hydrogen sector, the reality of the renewable energy market overtaking the conventional oil and gas sector has become all too real. Decarbonization of the global energy market has become a top priority.
