With 2025 fading into our collective memories, the new year will see several new renewable energy projects advancing as the world accepts the reality that things need to change in the global energy industry. RWE Renewables has recently broken ground on a couple of wind energy projects in Italy. The new wind power developments exemplify the ever-changing narrative for energy production across the global market.

The reality of climate change has become a top priority for the world

At the G20 Summit last year in South Africa, a multitude of nations reaffirmed their commitments to clean energy production and emissions reduction. Italy was one of the many nations that aimed to reach its net-zero targets over the coming years, and has now revealed that RWE will boost the nation’s clean energy output through two new wind energy projects.

Climate change has devastated the environment, with the latest earthquake in Japan proving that something needs to change, and the nations of the world need to develop more renewable energy projects to drastically reduce emissions from the energy market.

RWE breaks ground on several new wind energy projects in Italy

RWE currently operates 17 wind farms in Italy and has previously stated it aims to support Italy’s energy transition by investing in several new onshore wind energy projects. With the global energy transition away from fossil fuels in full swing, Italy is the latest European nation to foster a welcoming environment for clean energy.

“Our journey to support Italy’s energy transition continues. Following the commissioning of the Mondonuovo wind farm in July, we have started construction of two new onshore wind farms in Italy. Onshore wind power is a cornerstone of Italy’s energy transition, and for good reason: it is clean, mature and affordable.” – Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia

RWE Renewables is leading Italy’s energy transition to the renewable energy sector

Italy has stated that it aims to reach climate neutrality by the end of the decade, and in order to reach this lofty target, investments in new renewable energy projects are necessary. RWE has become the backbone of the Italian renewable energy sector through its substantial clean energy projects.

Wind power can drastically reduce emissions from the energy sector and could pave the way towards net-zero emissions for any country that welcomes the sector. Europe has proven to be a promising destination for the renewable energy market, as the vast majority of nations embrace clean energy generation.

What are RWE Renewables’ plans for the Italian wind energy market

The company has broken ground on the Serra Palino and Venusia wind projects. The Venusia wind farm will generate 45 MW with eight 5.6 MW turbines, while the Serra Palino wind energy project will provide upwards of 47 MW and comprise eight 5.9 MW turbines.

Italy’s embrace of the wind power sector is a far cry from the United States, which has revealed plans to cancel permits for several wind projects in Maryland and Massachusetts. Regardless of the sentiment for wind energy in the US, Europe is taking a much different approach.

“There is an urgent need to stop subsidising the fossil fuel industry, dramatically reduce wasted energy and significantly shift our power supplies from oil, coal and natural gas to wind, solar, geothermal and other renewable energy sources.” – Bill McKibben

A new year brings a renewed sense of optimism for the global clean energy sector

2025 saw the world begin to understand the need to end the reliance on oil and gas and instead focus on advancing the renewable energy sector. As new and innovative renewable energy technology emerges, the stance that Italy has taken to approve the two new wind energy projects marks a new year filled with opportunities to advance the use and investment in renewable energy.
