The development of the renewable energy market in Europe is attracting some serious outside investors in the energy market. As the renewable energy market grows, financial institutions and pension funds are seeing the potential for long-term returns from sizable investments in clean energy production. Sampension has now acquired a 50% interest in the nearly complete Tsoukes Sarres wind project in Greece. The rapid expansion of the renewable energy market has seen several investors outlining plans to pour vast amounts of resources into clean energy production across the world.

Sampension has acquired the stake from European Energy

The notable entry into the European renewable energy market has been a welcome change of pace for Sampension. The company acquired the 50% interest in the Greek wind project from European Energy.

Several market analysts have noted that as renewable energy assets mature into stable long-term investments, outside investors like Sampension are likely to see the financial potential of the clean energy market and pour vast amounts of money and resources into developing the renewable energy market.

European Energy, on the other hand, has been contemplating measures to divest investments and stakes in projects to then use the funds created to invest in other renewable energy projects in Europe, as noted by the company’s leadership.

“This divestment demonstrates our ability to develop and construct high-quality renewable energy assets and bring them together with long-term institutional partners,” – Jens-Peter Zink, Deputy CEO of European Energy

A new year brings with it a renewed sense of optimism for clean energy in Europe

As demand for clean energy increases, 2026 will see tremendous growth across the renewable energy market. Especially as nations aim to fill the energy gap left by Russia. The EU has approved a new set of regulations aimed at ending the flow of Russian energy supplies into Europe by the end of 2027.

Sampension is aiming to invest in renewable energy production in Europe

The pension fund, along with a litany of other financial institutions, is investing its sizable capital in renewable energy in Europe. The fund has confirmed its acquisition of a 50% interest in the Tsoukes Sarres wind project in Greece.

While the acquisition has been approved by the relevant authorities, the total amount of the transaction has not been disclosed by the parties. While details are slim at the moment, the transaction reflects a broader sentiment that sees institutional investors securing stakes in completed or near-completed renewable energy projects in Europe.

The Tsoukes Sarres wind project in Greece consists of six turbines from Vestas, each with an output capacity of 4,4 MW. Construction on the Greek wind project commenced in 2024, with expectations that the remaining development of the wind farm will be completed in the first half of this year.

The transaction also exemplifies investors’ confidence in the European clean energy market. Energy produced by the Tsoukes Sarres wind project in Greece will be sold on a merchant basis once the farm is fully operational. Vestas, which has supplied the necessary wind turbines for the project, has been building its European portfolio in recent years.

“The EU is determined to lead the energy transition, and to seize the opportunity to create economic growth and green jobs. The wind sector is key for the achievement of our clean energy and climate goals, but we need to make sure it can do business in a fair and supportive environment”. – European Commission

Sampension is aiming to diversify its investment portfolio

For the pension fund, the acquisition of a 50% interest in the Tsoukes Sarres wind project in Greece enables it to diversify its investment portfolio and provides the foundation for similar investments in the future, not only for Sampension but for other institutional investors as well. Innovations in wind turbine design have catapulted the wind energy market into a new era of clean energy production that will accelerate the energy transition in Europe.
