When it comes to wind turbines, they have always had their downfalls, such as the fact that they rarely work during snowfalls. A green “pod” wind turbine seems to be a rather promising invention that not only works during snowfalls but also addresses other core issues, including being compact, animal-friendly, and changing the way households look at the prospect of wind energy. Soon, households can produce 2 kW of power for free at home.

The “pod”, a wind turbine made for residential settings

PowerPod is a barrel-sized omnidirectional turbine designed by Halcium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The PowerPod is quite popular, particularly due to its enclosed design. The fact that the blades are not exposed means that the turbine’s blades won’t cause any harm to animals. The rotor is neatly embedded within a protective turbine shell.

Safety hazards are eliminated, allowing the turbine to be effectively placed on rooftops or in other smaller locations. However, the protective pod does more than just ensure safety. The shell is somewhat of a wind concentrator, drawing the air and pushing it towards the internal high-performance wind system. According to the company, this funneling effect accelerates wind speed considerably and increases power generation as well. This PowerPod can harness wind from all directions.

A turbine specifically meant to perform even in the snow

What makes Halcium’s turbine so interesting is the fact that it performs and remains resilient irrespective of the weather. The PowerPod is able to perform even in times of heavy snowfall. The more traditional turbines tend to slow down or not perform at all during snow, as ice accumulates in the blades. With the internal rotor being hidden in the “pod”, the turbine is able to work well during extreme snow.

In snowy climates, this seems like a far more lucrative option, particularly in the North. The promise by this company is that this wind turbine can considerably outperform solar panels (even during many sunny days).

Providing up to 2kW of power for the household

This turbine can be effortlessly integrated with home energy systems, which allows for hybrid solar-wind installations. The good news is that this updated model delivers on the promise of supplying up to 2kW of power in comparison to the older prototype that enabled only 1 kW of power. This feat can only be achieved since this compact pod can capitalize on lower wind speeds, too.

This solution is ideal for homeowners in settings where larger wind turbines won’t be ideal. Households can ensure that they are energy independent and have an option of not always relying on the grid for power. This is especially pertinent as the fuel price rises. This wind power solution is said to be a 360° wind turbine that also delivers 2kW of power at home, ensuring free green energy is supplied after capturing wind from all directions.

Making the move towards a wind-powered energy era

Halcium has not released any final pricing options, but the company is in favor of affordable pricing. Furthermore, this wind generator was created by the company with the hopes of providing a way to generate sustainable energy in a residential landscape. In keeping the residential setting in mind, the turbine is compact, works quietly, and is safe.

A weather-resistant turbine such as this one may very well be the wind solution we have been searching for. Innovators and companies with a strong interest in sustainable energy have come to realize that wind turbines don’t need blades anymore, nor do they need blades that are exposed. The new range of wind turbines on offer for residential settings makes us believe that even smaller homes and spaces have the chance of harnessing green power.
