When the energy industry decided to open the door for technology to determine some of the projects, there was no way of predicting the exact lengths to which it would influence future initiatives, including wind. As such, the modern energy landscape is filled with unpredictability as companies are coming up with fascinating ideas that have never been attempted. The latest to do so is the TECNALIA firm, which is currently working with Surion Wind Systems to modernize wind farms.

TECNALIA and Surion Wind Systems collaborate on a major project

Along with technological innovation, collaborations have been the most common element in the modern landscape of the energy industry. Previously, companies were reluctant to partner up because of past tensions and lack of trust, but globalization has made the world interconnected to such an extent that collaborations are easy to reach.

TECNALIA is the largest private non-profit applied research and technological development company in Spain and is well-respected in Europe. Its primary focus is transforming technological research into success by generating business opportunities for diverse industries.

Surion Wind Systems, on the other hand, is a Victoria-Gasteiz, Spain-based firm focused on modernizing wind farms through advanced, modular, and sustainable technology. After learning about the background information of both companies, it is easy to understand how they ended up collaborating.

Although there is a lot of coverage on the companies’ latest partnership, it is essential to highlight that they have a long history of uniting with the common aim of applying offshore technology to onshore wind projects.

A deeper insight into the companies’ desire to modernize wind farms

Despite an initial reluctance to accept the evolution of the energy industry, even conventionalists are becoming open to the idea of letting the modern resources change how energy is generated. With nations now accelerating the transition to cleaner energy, ancient wind farms present a growing challenge for the renewable sector because they cannot be as efficient as they need to be.

This gives the perfect opportunity for Spain’s leading research and technology organization, TECNALIA, to team up with Surion Wind Systems. The two will be aiming to improve efficiency, extend service life, and cut costs for onshore wind facilities within Europe and worldwide.

Modernizing wind farms: What does this objective entail?

One of the notable things about the contemporary landscape is that we are continuously entering uncharted territory as companies are pursuing ambitious initiatives that have no previous blueprint.

In this instance, the pair will be combining TECNALIA’s engineering experience with Surion’s innovative design concepts. Developers around the world can be excited because it means they will be receiving the first blueprint regarding modernizing wind farms.

Unpacking the timing of TECNALIA and Surion Wind System’s partnership

With the United States currently undergoing court cases and suspensions in wind energy initiatives, this left a wide open gap for other countries to exploit in the energy industry. Developers have been complaining that wind farms usually last for two to three decades before their performance significantly falters and maintenance expenses spike.

The continent of Europe and the United States are experiencing this negative phenomenon, meaning they can benefit massively from the project. Repowering partly or in full is a strategy that consists of renovating existing turbines.

It has become common because rather than building entirely new farms, repowering allows components to be upgraded, efficiency to be boosted, and overall projects to meet modern grid requirements at a lower cost.

We are not even halfway into 2026, and companies have come up with the most outlandish project ideas. The TECNALIA and Surion partnership is one that falls under TECNALIA’s deeptech4Impact initiative. The initiative aims to strengthen preliminary technological ventures with strong market potential. There is no doubt that the project will be one of the most anticipated and observed worldwide.
