TerraPower has continued to push boundaries in nuclear energy production and play a part in solidifying the United States as the top nuclear energy-producing nation in the world. As the nuclear powerhouse possesses the resources that foster top-notch nuclear production, one of the strategic ways to establish significance is to expand into other countries. Not all nations prioritize nuclear generation as much as the U.S. does, meaning its companies are able to enter different markets. This explains why TerraPower has filed for a Natrium reactor application with the U.K. nuclear regulators.

Natrium reactor application set to expand to the United Kingdom

TerraPower’s Natrium reactor technology has added new life to the nuclear space, which many felt was becoming stagnant. The United States has been dominating the sector for many decades, which might have reduced its willingness to participate in large-scale energy initiatives. However, TerraPower has emerged to play a massive role in progressing nuclear energy.

France remains the leading nuclear energy-producing country in Europe, but there is increased activity on the continent. This is because external companies are able to expand to Europe and assist countries in their nuclear initiatives.

For instance, one of the latest developments comes from the U.S. nuclear innovation company TerraPower, which has officially submitted its advanced Natrium reactor design to regulators in the United Kingdom.

The reason why this move has received widespread attention is that it is the first time that the company has pursued regulatory approval for the technology outside the United States. While everything is still hanging in the balance at the moment, if approved, the project could set a precedent for the deployment of next-generation nuclear plants in the U.K.’s ever-changing energy portfolio.

TerraPower continues to increase the significance of its Natrium reactors

If you have been following 2026 projects in the energy industry, then you are likely to have encountered Natrium reactors. With the growing significance of technology and globalization, countries are increasingly applying the same energy-generating strategies. Before going too far, it is essential to clarify what Natrium reactors are briefly.

TerraPower’s Natrium design is an advanced nuclear system that is very different from conventional nuclear power plants. Traditional reactors typically rely on water cooling, whereas Natrium reactors use liquid sodium as a coolant. This means they have the ability to operate at lower pressures and potentially improve safety and efficiency.

One of the most interesting features of the technology is that each Natrium unit typically produces around 345 megawatts of baseload electricity. However, it can store up to roughly 500 megawatts. Now that TerraPower is aiming to expand into the U.K., the European nation is set to become one of the first on the continent to receive a unique nuclear energy-generating resource.

How has TerraPower taken a significant step toward global deployment of its reactors?

The submission of the application introduces TerraPower’s Natrium reactor into the United Kingdom’s Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process. This is the official review system used to evaluate the safety, security, and environmental performance of new nuclear technologies before they are built.

The application was initially filed in October 2025 and has now been accepted into the regulatory process, marking progress in the company’s international expansion strategy. The GDA process is not simple and straightforward because it is done by several U.K. regulatory bodies, including the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales.

Why is the United Kingdom open to receiving advanced nuclear plants?

The reason why the U.K. is associated with TerraPower is that it has been diligently seeking advanced nuclear technologies as part of its long-term decarbonization strategy. The government aims to expand nuclear capacity and other renewable sources to ensure the availability of a reliable electricity supply while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

It is exciting to see that European nations are increasingly adopting nuclear initiatives. For the U.S., this is a massive moment that solidifies its dominance.
