Texas set back-to-back electricity records during a brutal heat wave and the grid held without a single blackout warning

Not long ago, a heat wave of this scale would have put the state on edge.
Records shattered, one after another
Tuesday set the tone. ERCOT recorded 87,403 MW of demand — easily clearing the previous record of 85,508 MW set during a 2023 heat wave. Then Wednesday pushed the number further still, to 91,308 MW. Two records in two days.

Other milestones fell alongside them. Maximum net load reached 75,733 MW. Solar production peaked at 34,665 MW, a new high for the state. Maximum energy storage discharging hit 11,980 MW — a figure that would have seemed implausible just a few years ago.
What didn’t happen matters just as much. ERCOT issued zero conservation requests throughout the entire event. No alerts asking Texans to raise their thermostats, no warnings of a grid under stress. The system absorbed the demand and kept running.
Batteries: from 4,000 MW to nearly 12,000 MW in two years
The battery numbers tell the clearest story of how much has changed. When Texas hit a comparable peak demand record two years ago, the grid drew roughly 4,000 MW from battery storage. During this week’s peak, that figure climbed to nearly 12,000 MW — a threefold increase in just two years.
That surge in storage deployment is what absorbed the sharpest demand spikes. Batteries respond within seconds, filling the gap between what generation produces and what customers need at any given moment. That speed matters most precisely when the grid is most stressed. Texas now has 29,163 MWh of installed storage capacity, with further growth already in the pipeline.
Solar and storage: the quiet transformation since Winter Storm Uri
The starting point for this transformation is February 2021. Winter Storm Uri knocked out power for millions of Texans for days, exposing serious vulnerabilities in the grid. The failure was painful — and it accelerated investment in a way that few policy mandates could have.
Since then, Texas has become the fastest-growing solar market in the country, with 53,568 MWdc of installed capacity. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), an additional 39,053 MW is projected to come online over the next five years.
That solar growth pairs directly with the battery expansion. Solar generates heavily during daylight hours; batteries store the surplus and release it during evening peaks when the sun drops but air conditioners keep running. Gas generation adds another layer of backup. This week, all of it worked in concert.
A 438,000 MW queue — and a new way to manage it
Texas’s grid success is happening against a backdrop of extraordinary demand pressure. ERCOT is currently tracking more than 438,000 MW of large load connection requests, and nearly 89% of those come from data centers alone.
That number reflects how aggressively compute infrastructure is seeking to plant itself in Texas, drawn by land availability, relatively low power costs, and a deregulated market. Managing that queue has become one of ERCOT’s most pressing operational challenges.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas recently approved ERCOT’s new “Batch Zero” process to address it. Rather than evaluating large connection requests one at a time — a method that had grown slow and repetitive — the new framework groups projects of 75 MW or greater into a single study. ERCOT can then assess cumulative grid impact, allocate available capacity, and identify where transmission upgrades are needed. It’s the first ISO in the United States to use a batch process for large-user connections.
How much risk remains this summer?
This week’s heat wave was handled well, but summer isn’t over. ERCOT’s own forecasts put the probability of a grid emergency at 0.09% in June and 0.21% in July — both reassuringly low. August carries a higher projected risk at 5.96%, followed by 4.38% in September.
Those later-summer numbers deserve attention. Heat in Texas doesn’t peak in June. The most dangerous weeks often come after prolonged temperatures drain reserves and equipment stress accumulates over time. ERCOT had anticipated demand could exceed 92 GW this summer, driven by heat and growing data center loads — a threshold that hasn’t been crossed yet. To prepare, roughly 11 GW of new capacity was added in the months before summer began.
What to watch as the season continues
The next few months will test whether this week’s performance reflects a durable shift or simply a favorable set of conditions. August will be the real stress test — higher risk, potentially higher demand, and less margin for error.
The longer arc is worth tracking too. Texas’s solar and storage pipeline is substantial, and the Batch Zero process will shape how — and how fast — new large loads connect to the grid. If data center growth continues at its current pace, capacity additions will need to keep outrunning demand just to maintain the buffer.
What this week showed is that the investments made since 2021 are producing real results. Whether Texas can sustain that pace of build-out as the demands on its grid keep climbing is the question the rest of this summer will begin to answer.
