A cargo transfer hose parted at a mooring buoy 18 miles off Louisiana while a tanker was still pumping, and 31,500 gallons of Venezuelan heavy sour crude went into the Gulf before anyone on the water saw it
At four in the morning the sea out there is black and the deck lights do not reach it.
A slick makes no sound and shows nothing in the dark.
By sunrise a satellite pass had picked out a sheen already drifting with the current toward a low line of sand and grass to the north.
The facility sits about 18 nautical miles off the Louisiana coast, and it exists because the biggest tankers afloat cannot come any closer.
Onshore, nobody watching a gauge had seen it begin.
Which raises the first thing worth understanding, and it is not the volume. It is what sits between an open end and the sea.
What sits between an open end and the sea
The port is not a wharf.
Tankers too deep for any harbor on the coast moor to floating buoys standing in about 110 feet of water, out past the shallow shelf.
From the buoy, flexible hoses carry the cargo down to a fixed connection on the seabed and on through a buried line to shore.
That transfer hose is the one component in the whole chain that has to do two incompatible things at once. It must hold sustained pressure, and it must bend and stretch to follow a ship riding the swell.
It is the joint between something moving and something that cannot move.
When one parts in the middle of a transfer there is no valve at the break. Flow stops when the system is shut down and bled off from controls on land, not at the tear.
The cargo made that worse. This was a Venezuelan heavy sour blend, dense and sticky and high in sulfur, and it behaves nothing like a light grade.
It barely evaporates. It sinks into sediment, it clings, and it coats what it touches.
A port with no dock, 18 miles out
The facility sits about 18 nautical miles off the Louisiana coast, and it exists because the biggest tankers afloat cannot come any closer.
Three single point mooring buoys stand roughly 8,000 feet from the marine terminal itself.
From there a 48 inch line runs to shore and into a set of salt dome caverns, and from the caverns the crude joins a pipeline network connected to about half of the refining capacity in the country.
It is the only place in the United States where a fully loaded very large crude carrier can be served at all.
Everything about it is built to keep the deep water part offshore and the storage part onshore.
The hose is the seam where those two halves meet.
The estimate that kept climbing
The hose failed at around four in the morning on 26 February 2026, and a Unified Command of the Coast Guard, the state oil spill coordinator and the port operator formed the next day.
The volume was not known for over a week.
The first figure was under 100 barrels. On 3 March it was raised to 300. On 5 March it settled at 750 barrels, which is 31,500 gallons.
The response scaled with it. About 330 people, 40 vessels and 5,000 feet of boom on 5 March, then 464 people, 60 vessels and 28,300 feet two days later.
By 16 March there were about 667 responders, 114 vessels and 29.5 miles of boom, with 655 barrels logged as recovered.
Where the recovery number needs a second look
That last pair of figures produces a recovery rate near 87 percent, and it is the number in this story that deserves the hardest look.
Open water skimming rarely gets close to that. Experienced responders put a typical figure nearer 20 percent, and both totals rest on visual estimates rather than metered volumes.
No dispersants were used or authorized, which is unusual and worth noting on its own.
The cause needs the same care. A parted cargo hose is the reported cause and the allegation in the litigation that followed, not a published finding, and the Unified Command has released response figures rather than a mechanism, as the Unified Command updates show and industry reporting repeats.
Distance is the other constraint, the same one that shapes a platform built with no marine base anywhere near it, and the same tension that runs through fights over project level reviews in remote waters.
What it leaves open for the port and the coast
State health authorities closed shellfish harvesting areas as a precaution, reaching bays that carry commercial shrimp and oyster work.
That is the part measured in livelihoods rather than in barrels.
Seven hundred and fifty barrels is a rounding error against a single tanker cargo.
It still produced a response of hundreds of people, more than a hundred boats and dozens of miles of boom, which says something about the crude and about the coastline it drifted toward.
The open question is narrow and specific. Nobody has published why the hose let go, whether inspection intervals or operating pressure had anything to do with it, and until that lands the weakest link in a deepwater import terminal stays exactly where it was.
Not the tanker. Not the buried pipe. The flexible joint between them.
