A Critical Mineral at a Critical Moment: The Importance of Restoring Domestic Tungsten Production in the U.S.

While the industry fears implications from tariffs and demand upset, Venture Global announced today that the Calcasieu Pass LNG project went live with the offering of complete commercial service. Through long-term contracts, the company now exports competitively priced domestic liquefied natural gas. With the project taking 68 months to complete after the final investment decision was made, the Calcasieu project ranks as the fastest greenfield LNG development to have been completed.

The project design is comprised of multiple liquefaction trains and will play a critical role in the domestic expansion of LNG export capacity. The project’s commencement comes at an ideal period as many countries across the globe still seek alternative choices to purchasing gas from Russia. With long term pricing set under $2/mmbtu for liquefaction, stability is expected for the next 20 years.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted approval to Venture Global to initiate the fully operational status approximately two weeks ago. This came in response to the LNG developer’s request made to federal regulators for permission to begin its operations at its entire Calcasieu Pass LNG export facility as well as the TransCameron pipeline project.

The FERC filing previously stated, “Venture Global has demonstrated that the above-mentioned facilities have been constructed in accordance with Commission approval and applicable standards and can be expected to operate safely and reliably as designed.”

Calcasieu Pass originally started producing LNG at the beginning of 2022 and has now fully developed into full service operation. While project success has fortified Venture Global as a major player in the LNG market, the company still forges ahead with the construction of its Plaquemines LNG project and the addition of a sizeable capacity increase.

“I am incredibly proud of our team, who have worked relentlessly and diligently to successfully construct and commission our first LNG project,” said Mike Sabel, Venture Global CEO, in a press release. “We are excited to reach this milestone and are grateful for our regulators and supply chain partners who have worked with our team to reach commercial operations as efficiently and safely as possible.”

Venture Global has endured multiple challenges through various phases of the Calcasieu project. After navigating the global pandemic of 2020, the company and project progress further endured two significant hurricanes and a power system challenge that resulted in a costly remediation response. Still, the company maintained a safety record that resulted in outperforming the average Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of the oil and gas industry.

Venture Global is presently developing and building more than 100 MTPS of production capacity to contribute to the commitment of providing the globe with clean and affordable energy. Taking that commitment a step further, the company is in the development stages of carbon capture and sequestration projects to be located at each of its LNG facilities.
