One might struggle to find a better plan to increase the already dominant energy production in the United States than WhiteWater Midstream’s recent plan to boost the throughput on the Eiger Express gas corridor. What exactly is WhiteWater planning, I hear you ask? Well, for one, the company has detailed the plan to lift the mainline capacity to reach unfathomable levels, a necessity, one might say, in the current energy environment in the United States.
Can WhiteWater lean on the expertise of the Matterhorn Joint Venture to deliver on the Eiger Express expansion?
As with most nationally important energy projects, the Eiger Express Pipeline is being developed by a joint venture, specifically the Matterhorn Joint Venture. Which energy companies form the Matterhorn JV, you ask? Specifically, some of the largest and most influential energy companies in North America.
As new natural gas pipelines are developed across North America, WhiteWater and its partners have taken a Final Investment Decision on the plan to develop the Eiger Express Pipeline expansion.
The FID was taken in August of 2025, and since then, the project has attracted the attention of several energy majors, all of whom are targeting a 2028 completion date for the pipeline.
The positively prolific and profitable Permian basin is a prime energy resource location
The Eiger Express Pipeline will originate in the Permian basin, specifically in the Midland and Delaware basins, and will run for an astonishing 450 miles to the Gulf Coast region. The pipeline also has the additional capacity to supply the Corpus Christi market.
The Matterhorn Joint Venture has committed to expanding the mainline capacity to meet the anticipated increase in demand for natural gas not only in the US, but across the international market as well.
How will the planned expansion affect the Eiger Express Pipeline completion date?
Not at all, according to WhiteWater and the other partners in the Matterhorn JV. The initial plan was for the Eiger Express Pipeline to transport 2.5 billion cubic feet per day of gas from the Permian to the export terminals and processing facilities on the Gulf Coast.
However, as the current environment in the United States has called for an increase in energy resource production, WhiteWater, along with the Joint Venture partners, has agreed to expand the Eiger Express mainline capacity to 3.7 Bcf/d.
Since announcing a Final Investment Decision on the expansion project, White Water has secured additional firm transportation agreements with several parties. To deliver on the expansion plan, the mainline of the Eiger Express pipeline will be expanded from 42 inches to 48 inches.
Importantly, WhiteWater has noted that the expansion plan will not affect the timeline and expected completion date of the pipeline. All expectations are for the pipeline to enter full service by 2028.
The Matterhorn JV partners have other pipelines planned for 2026
One of the partners in the Matterhorn JV, specifically MPLX, has recently detailed the plans for several new pipelines in the US, exemplifying the need to construct more transportation capacity for the US natural gas market to meet export ambitions.
WhiteWater will undoubtedly lean on the expertise of the Matterhorn Joint Venture to safely and efficiently develop the Eiger Express Pipeline, which will now see the mainline being expanded to handle significantly higher volumes of natural gas.
The expansion of the US energy industry has been a sight to behold
One could easily state that the current expansion of the US energy industry is unprecedented. The situation is such that some US-based energy companies with decades of experience have opted to reshape leadership to facilitate a further expansion of the US pipeline portfolio. One thing that is for certain is that WhiteWater Midstream and the Matterhorn JV partners stand at the forefront of the US energy production expansion.
