The world is edging ever closer to a future without the need for fossil fuels. This has been proven by the news that solar generation has risen across Europe during the first half of the year, offset slightly by declines in the wind power sector. Nearly every nation in the world has embraced the potential that the renewable energy sector presents, with enormous amounts of money being invested in both the solar and wind sectors. For the first time, energy generation exceeded demand across Europe, pointing to the promise that the renewable energy sector has presented the world.
The global reliance on the traditional non-renewable energy sector is coming to an end
For far too long, the world has relied on the conventional energy generation that the coal and gas sectors present. That increased reliance on the traditional sector has resulted in a myriad of climate disasters ravaging the planet. As the state of the environment worsened, it became clear that the world needed to embrace the potential that the renewable energy sector has in abundance.
Solar power, in particular, has existed in its current form since the early 80s, but never managed to make a significant dent in the energy sector. However, as energy demand across the world increases due to a litany of mitigating factors, the solar and wind sector has seen substantial increases that meet and in some cases exceed demand.
Some of the greatest minds in history have noted the potential that solar power has in revolutionizing the energy sector.
“I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.” – Thomas Edison
“You could power the entire United States with about 150 to 200 square kilometres of solar panels, the entire United States.” – Elon Musk
Solar generation exceeded coal for the first time in history during the first half of the year
Reports have emerged that note that for the first time in history, solar energy production exceeded coal and gas. Electricity demand across the globe rose 2.6% in the first half of 2025, adding 369 TWh compared to the same period last year.
In what could be a world first, solar power generation met 83% of the rise. The evidence presents a reality where solar and wind power have grown significantly and have begun to replace the conventional oil and gas sectors.
Coal fell by 0.6% (-31 TWh) and gas by 0.2% (-6 TWh) for a total decline of 0.3% (-27 TWh). For the first time on record, solar and wind power exceeded the energy generation numbers of coal and gas. Renewables supplied 5,072 TWh of global electricity, up from 4,709 TWh in the same period in 2024, overtaking coal at 4,896 TWh, down 31 TWh year-on-year.
As solar deployment accelerates, nations are turning to the biggest solar panel producers to meet a rise in demand. The trend aligns perfectly with the global community’s calls for more renewable energy generation to replace the fossil fuel sector.
“We are seeing the first signs of a crucial turning point. Solar and wind are now growing fast enough to meet the world’s growing appetite for electricity. This marks the beginning of a shift where clean power is keeping pace with demand growth.” – Małgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, Senior Electricity Analyst at Ember
The global trend of reducing reliance on fossil fuels is finally producing results
For the past few decades, the global community has urged policymakers and industry leaders to implement measures that reduce reliance on the conventional energy sector. The high-energy usage nations of the world have invested vast amounts of money and resources in the solar power sector as of late, and the result has been that solar power has, for the first time, overtaken coal and gas generation during the first half of the year. The future for the renewable energy sector is bright, and the world could not be happier.
