Solar generation exceeded coal for the first time in history during the first half of the year
Reports have emerged that note that for the first time in history, solar energy production exceeded coal and gas. Electricity demand across the globe rose 2.6% in the first half of 2025, adding 369 TWh compared to the same period last year.
In what could be a world first, solar power generation met 83% of the rise. The evidence presents a reality where solar and wind power have grown significantly and have begun to replace the conventional oil and gas sectors.
Coal fell by 0.6% (-31 TWh) and gas by 0.2% (-6 TWh) for a total decline of 0.3% (-27 TWh). For the first time on record, solar and wind power exceeded the energy generation numbers of coal and gas. Renewables supplied 5,072 TWh of global electricity, up from 4,709 TWh in the same period in 2024, overtaking coal at 4,896 TWh, down 31 TWh year-on-year.
As solar deployment accelerates, nations are turning to the biggest solar panel producers to meet a rise in demand. The trend aligns perfectly with the global community’s calls for more renewable energy generation to replace the fossil fuel sector.
