SMT and Axpo 320 MWh battery storage

Battery energy storage projects have been among the most popular ones pursued by developers in 2026. For many decades, facilities like wind and solar that depend on specific weather have been criticized for intermittency issues, which means they are unable to guarantee consistent energy generation. Through the incorporation of technological innovation in the energy industry, developers were able to establish that energy generation and storage facilities could be combined to maintain electricity availability throughout the year. As of late, it is SMT and Axpo that have secured a seven-year revenue arrangement for a 320 MWh battery storage project in Texas.

Analyzing the significance of collaboration in the clean energy industry

As seen in most of the projects that have materialized in 2026, collaborations are highly important because they allow companies to combine their expertise and complement each other.

The execution of energy initiatives comes with great risks that are sometimes too much for a single company to manage on its own. As such, partnerships allow companies to share the risks and ensure that the planned initiative materializes as initially planned.

SMT Energy is a leading U.S. developer of renewable energy and front-of-the-meter Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). It is based in Boulder, Colorado, and specializes in engineering utility-scale storage facilities using machine learning and AI to optimize power dispatch and support green markets.

The entity has developed a reputation for operating across the entire development lifecycle from land acquisition and engineering to construction and asset management. It has a project portfolio of over 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy assets valued at more than $1.5 billion.

SMT Energy and Axpo combine for a groundbreaking seven-year revenue arrangement

SMT Energy and Axpo revealed that they have signed a 120 MW, seven-year battery storage swap agreement that is tied to SMT Energy’s Houston IV BESS, a newly operational 160 MW/320 MWh battery energy storage system in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT market).

The agreement is one that supports long-term revenue visibility for Houston IV and highlights SMT Energy’s ability to develop, commercialize, and operate battery storage assets. Axpo Group, on the other hand, is regarded as Switzerland’s largest producer of renewable energy and an international leader in energy trading and solar and wind power commercialization.

It is headquartered in Baden and employs roughly 7,500 people while operating in a variety of regions such as Europe, North America, and Asia. The company operates over 100 power plants and produces a climate-friendly mix of hydro, biomass, solar, wind, and nuclear energy.

A brief overview of the companies’ 320 MWh battery storage project in Texas

Briefly put, SMT Energy has executed a 120 MW agreement that provides the company with a better chance of serving customers who are after flexibility. The agreement provides SMT Energy with predictable, long-term contracted revenue for its Houston IV battery projects while supporting SMT Energy’s ability to advance extra battery storage assets in Texas.

There is a massive amount of optimism regarding what the collaboration might mean for the future progression of both companies. Luke Tosheff, who is the Origination Director at Axpo in the U.S., stated the following:

“Our focus at Axpo is to provide structured products that help developers like SMT Energy navigate market complexity. This seven-year swap is an example of how we can create long-term revenue certainty for battery storage projects.”

Looking ahead: Assessing what the agreement signals for Texas’s future landscape

SMT Energy views itself as a company that has all the resources and expertise to deliver a captivating initiative like Houston IV. The company believes that pairing a 160 MW operating BESS with a seven-year structured swap agreement is a significant commercial milestone that provides durable revenue visibility for the project.

Texas is the fastest-growing battery energy storage system developing state in the United States. The initiative being centered there means the state will be able to further enhance its total capacity.
