The clean energy transition has created an environment where companies recognize the benefits of collaborating instead of pursuing projects individually. Partnerships allow various companies and departments to share the responsibility and the finances that are involved in the energy project, especially if the entities are able to complement each other effectively. Ultimately, this increased sense of togetherness has been essential to the ability of companies to take massive strides toward reaching their clean energy targets. On that note, X-energy, Amazon and AEP push ahead with plans for a 960 MW nuclear project in Indiana, putting nearly a gigawatt of advanced reactor capacity on the table.

Assessing the overall importance of X-energy in advancing the nuclear sector

X-energy is a leading designer of advanced small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and fuel technology developed to establish a new standard in clean, safe, reliable energy. The company’s intrinsically safe Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor and TRISO-X particle fuel expand applications for nuclear technology, with commercial projects across grid, industrial, and AI.

The energy company has played an integral role in advancing the U.S. nuclear sector over the years, and industry experts believe that it will not be slowing in the coming years despite the tremendous amount of success that it has achieved. Nuclear energy continues to be a pivotal part of the U.S. energy and security sector.

has been on diversifying the energy portfolio of every state, there are still places that are seen as the hub for the generation of certain energy sources.

Together, X-energy’s technology drives enhanced safety, lower cost, faster construction timelines, and scalable deployment when compared with other SMRs and conventional nuclear.

X-energy, Amazon and AEP push ahead with plans for a 960 MW nuclear project in Indiana

A press release from X-energy revealed that the company has entered into a Joint Development Agreement to advance feasibility work for a proposed 960 MW Xe-100 small modular reactor project in Indiana. This is a massive announcement that shows the amount of revenue that companies stand to generate from the energy industry.

In the joint agreement, Amazon.com, Inc. is expected to provide certain project development funding for the effort, marking the second commercial deployment under X-energy and Amazon’s partnership that is aimed at bringing more than 5 GW of new nuclear capacity to the U.S. grid by 2039.

X-energy and AEP are expected to evaluate the development of a 12-unit Xe-100 plant near the former site of the retired Breed Generating Station in Sullivan County, Indiana. The proposed project would redevelop the AEP-owned brownfield site for advanced nuclear power, adding clean baseload capacity to help meet growing demand for safe, reliable energy across Indiana and the region.

What does the project signify for X-energy as it seeks to finish the year strongly?

Building on Amazon’s investment in, and ongoing collaboration with X-energy, the project is intended to be a second grid-scale partnership to support grid reliability with new clean generating capacity, joining Energy Northwest’s Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington State.

While a huge focus for the U.S. has been on diversifying the energy portfolio of every state, there are still places that are seen as the hub for the generation of certain energy sources. For instance, Indiana has made advanced nuclear energy a central part of its energy strategy as part of the state’s all-of-the-above approach to affordable, reliable power.

The anticipated transformation of the nuclear sector expected in 2027

X-energy’s Xe-100 is an 80 MWe high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, using helium as a coolant, and powered by Tri-structural, Isotropic (TRISO) fuel, described by the U.S. Department of Energy as the most robust nuclear energy fuel on earth because of its ability to handle extreme temperatures without melting.

Collaborations on their own are not enough to guarantee the completion of a project because companies must still be able to complement each other effectively instead of just relying on the past success that they have enjoyed.

The proposed project combines AEP’s power generation and nuclear operating expertise, Amazon’s milestone-based development capital, and X-energy’s advanced nuclear technology to deliver a clean, safe, long-term energy solution.
