Solar developers are increasingly working on sites that are complex, fragmented, or topographically difficult—which pushes them toward systems offering more flexibility in hardware, terrain handling, and tight land constraints. ARRAY says the D2S was built around the economics that actually decide whether a project works: upfront capital costs, how much grading a site needs, and what it costs to keep everything running across a 20- or 30-year project life.

Key technical features of the DuraTrack D2S

ARRAY says it cuts down on unnecessary wind stow energy losses, keeping the tracker generating when it otherwise would’ve stopped, contributing to a better overall energy yield. The claimed energy yield benefit runs up to 4% from this feature alone.

Terrain adaptability is the other major differentiator. The D2S uses ARRAY’s OmniTrack® capability, letting the tracker follow natural land contours rather than forcing developers to flatten the site first. That can reduce grading costs during construction and help preserve the site’s natural ecology.

On the software side, the D2S connects with ARRAY’s SmarTrack® platform, adding terrain-adaptive backtracking, diffuse weather response, and tools aimed at reducing exposure to extreme weather. ARRAY also points to faster installation and lower ongoing maintenance as design goals, though the announcement doesn’t back those claims with specific numbers.

Expected effects on solar project economics

ARRAY positions the D2S as a way to improve project economics at multiple stages. Up front, faster installation and reduced grading are expected to lower capital expenditure compared to more terrain-intensive builds.

Over the project lifetime, the passive wind stow system does the heaviest lifting. Standard dual-row trackers can bleed meaningful energy yield when wind sensors trigger unnecessary stows—a problem ARRAY says its mechanical approach sidesteps entirely. Those avoided losses compound over decades. Maintenance costs are also cited as a design priority, though no specific figures are attached.

Salix Solar’s reaction gives the pitch some real-world grounding. The developer said it had been actively searching for a passive-stow tracker in a dual-row configuration and moved quickly once ARRAY brought the D2S to the table.
