“Weight training and running are part of my daily routine, whether I’m working offshore or at home on break. Having a year-round rigid training plan takes the decision-making process out of the equation, and scheduling a pre-shift workout in the gym helps get my day off to a productive start. Never believe anyone who says you can’t train for a marathon on a treadmill!”

Wellsite geologist Amanda Barlow, shown here doing pull-ups in an outdoor gym on a rig in the Indian Ocean, has been working offshore for 20 years. She is also a marathon runner, most recently having achieved a guaranteed Boston Marathon qualifying time at the 2024 California International Marathon in Sacramento. Barlow is the author of An Inconvenient Life, Call of the Jungle, and Offshore Oil & Gas People. Connect with Barlow on LinkedIn. Photo courtesy of Amanda Barlow.
