Why moving power 115 miles needs a corridor this wide
At 765 kilovolts, this is the highest transmission voltage in service anywhere in North America.
The reason to use it is loss. Push the same power at a higher voltage and the current drops, and resistive losses fall with the square of the current.
The penalty is physical. Higher voltage needs more air around every conductor, so the towers get taller and the cleared strip beneath them gets wider.
Here that means structures between 135 and 165 feet and a right of way roughly two football fields across.

Who is building it and what for

Four companies are building it together, and the stated purpose is to carry power east from the Ohio Valley toward northern Virginia.
The demand driving that is load growth in the north, which in practice means data centers, and the segment alone is put at roughly a billion dollars.
Up to nine counties could be crossed depending on which route is finally chosen, and the choice has not been made.

What the reactor at the end of it actually is
A utility is separately considering a small modular reactor at the substation where the line begins.
Those two facts share a map pin and nothing else. The line was planned for regional transfer and would be built whether or not the reactor is.
The landowner has been careful about this distinction in public. His objection is to the route and the process, and he has said plainly that the technology itself is not his issue.
That matters in a permitting record, because a specific routing objection carries procedural weight at a hearing and a general one mostly does not.
Nothing in the public record ties the two approvals together either, and they run on separate schedules before separate bodies.
One is a proposal. The other is a filing.
Where a landowner runs out of standing
Virginia hands a lot of this to one state body, and the sequence matters more than the volume of opposition.
The builder files with the state commission, expected around this month, and an evaluation running about a year follows.
If the commission issues a certificate of public convenience and necessity, eminent domain authority follows from that grant.
After that point the argument narrows sharply. A landowner can contest what the easement is worth. Whether the line crosses the property at all is settled.
So the window for changing a route closes when the certificate issues, and it is open today.
Reactors of this class are chasing exactly the load this line is built to serve, which is why small reactors keep appearing beside data center plans.

What usually happens to one objection
Projects at this scale rarely stop because a single owner refuses, and they do reroute when rerouting is cheaper than fighting.
That is the realistic hope here, and it depends on documentation rather than volume.
Water is the other objection being raised locally. Residents downstream of the site are asking what a reactor and a data center cluster together would draw from the river in a dry year, and nobody has published that figure.
The commission decision is expected about a year after filing, with the line itself targeted for the end of the decade.
