The wind energy sector has been through an exceedingly tough time this year, with a litany of wind projects being cancelled in the United States as the President rolls back almost all permits for new wind projects. However, the South American market is not taking the same approach to the wind power market; in fact, Brazil has now revealed plans to break ground on the Dom Inocêncio wind project in the new year, with expectations for the project to reach full commissioning by 2028.

The return of the wind power sector to Brazil is set to kick off next year

Brazil has been subjected to several political scandals that have rocked the nation in recent years, with the former President being convicted and sent to jail. The energy market in the nation has been dealing with the inevitable consequences of a fluctuating approval mechanism in the nation. However, the government is pleased to announce the return of the wind energy sector following two years of stagnation.

Casa dos Ventos, one of the largest renewable energy companies in Brazil, has placed an order for over 100 wind turbines with manufacturer Vestas to bring the newest wind energy project in Brazil to fruition. The 828 MW order has been placed, and construction of the necessary wind turbines has begun, marking the return of the wind energy market to a nation that boasts exceedingly strong winds.

“Through our partnership with Vestas, we are bringing solutions that deliver the reliability and performance required for a project of this magnitude. This new agreement is yet another demonstration of our commitment to supporting the expansion of Brazil’s renewable energy matrix. In addition to driving the country’s energy transition, our investment will also significantly boost the socio-economic development of the region,” – Lucas Araripe, Executive Director of Casa dos Ventos

Brazil has become the latest nation to embrace the renewable energy market

In addition to supplying the necessary wind turbines for the project, Vestas will manage the construction process at the Dom Inocêncio wind project. Furthermore, Vestas will take on the responsibility of operation and management services for the wind project through a 25-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement. While Europe increases its energy output from renewable energy projects, Brazil is only getting started.

Both companies noted that they expect construction on the Dom Inocêncio wind project to begin in the new year and target a full-scale commissioning by 2028 at the very latest. The new wind energy project can strengthen Brazil’s energy security and provide vast amounts of clean energy while keeping a watchful eye on the emission problems that have swept through the international energy market.

“Receiving Casa dos Ventos’ trust once again for a project of this magnitude is a great source of pride for us. Casa dos Ventos is a key player in expanding renewable generation in Brazil. It is an honor to support a partner that shares the same ambition: to develop projects that drive the energy transition, expand access to clean energy, and foster socio-economic growth in the regions where they operate,” – Eduardo Ricotta, President of Vestas for Latin America

The new project is part of Brazil’s plan to revive the wind energy market

The Dom Inocêncio wind project marks a turning point for Brazil, as it is the first major wind energy project that has been approved by the government since 2023.  This signals the government’s positive sentiment for the renewable energy market, which has been growing at an astonishing rate over the past few years as renewable energy technologies advance beyond comprehension. The future of the Brazilian renewable energy market will depend on the success of the latest wind energy project that has been given the green light for construction to begin in the new year.
