Gen2 Energy has announced that it has secured grid capacity for maritime use to advance the 195 MW Mosjøen green hydrogen project. Europe has become a welcoming destination for the renewable energy market as nations aim to increase energy output and diversify energy mixes. Gen2 has been working with the regional government to reach the first phase in what will become a major green hydrogen production facility in Europe.
Norway is fast becoming a major driver of growth for the renewable energy market
The rapid transformation of the global energy market has been a sight for sore eyes across the world. The global energy transition has encompassed the entire market as nations aim to meet clean energy generation and emissions reduction targets.
Norway has provided the necessary grid capacity to advance the latest European green hydrogen development. By securing the grid capacity, Gen2 Energy can now proceed with the first phase of the green hydrogen development at Nesbruket in Mosjøen.
The company has stated that the initial phase will allow for the production of approximately 30 tonnes of liquefied green hydrogen per day, with Gen2 noting the project could be scaled up to reach a larger output capacity.
Gen2 Energy is now planning to launch the first phase of green hydrogen production for the Mosjøen development
Gen2 Energy has noted that the capacity reservation provides the necessary certainty for investors to reach a Final Investment Decision and commence with construction activities. Once fully operational, the green hydrogen project will support Norway and Gen2’s emission reduction ambitions, specifically for the maritime sector, as it is a major contributor to the emissions of harmful carbon into the atmosphere.
“Green hydrogen represents a transformative opportunity, not just for energy security, but for a just and inclusive transition that bridges the gap between emerging economies and global sustainability goals.” – Dr. Hugo Meyer van den Berg, University of Cape Town
Gen2 Energy has praised the support of the local and national governments
The company has praised the support of the regional government in advancing the Mosjøen Green Hydrogen Project to reach the first critical phase. Renewable energy generation has swept across the world as nations aim to diversify energy mixes and address climate change.
Chief Executive Officer of Gen2 Energy, Lena Halvari, has stated that the milestone achievement of securing the needed grid capacity for the green hydrogen project will support Norway’s energy transition away from fossil fuel-based energy production towards the untapped and overlooked potential of the renewable energy market.
Halvari also noted that the scalability of green hydrogen as a fuel resource can drastically decarbonize the maritime sector in Norway, and potentially the rest of the world as well. With Kawasaki Heavy Industries revealing a new 50,000-m³ vessel powered by green hydrogen, the reality is that more renewable energy projects are set to emerge from the sea of possibilities for the maritime market.
“Europe has the potential to become a technology leader in the promising future market of green hydrogen generation.” – Philip Hainbach, Head of Energy Policy and Governmental Affairs at Enapter
Several European nations are developing green hydrogen production projects
Following in the sizable footsteps of Gen2 Energy in Norway, Austria has seen its green hydrogen production market boosted by the news that OMV has secured public funding for its 140 MW green hydrogen facility. The remarkable growth of the green hydrogen sector in Europe has been a welcome change from the generational reliance on fossil fuel-based energy generation; however, if the renewable energy market is to overtake oil and gas, more investments will become a necessity this year and into the future, especially in Europe.
