After experts unveiled the current and future significance of hydrogen to the renewable energy landscape, there has unsurprisingly been an increased number of companies that are willing to invest their money in large-scale initiatives. The United States is willing to collaborate with nations with which it has no tension; hence, there have been external companies expanding there. Among those entities is Primary Hydrogen, which has now broadened its development pipeline with additional projects across the United States.

What has been interesting to witness in hydrogen production is the variety of companies that are taking on projects. For instance, there are veteran firms that are using their reputation to attain groundbreaking projects, whereas there are also newer companies like Primary Hydrogen using their resources for hydrogen developments.

Primary Hydrogen Corporation is a Canadian-based natural hydrogen explorer that is particularly focused on purchasing and developing natural and white hydrogen properties. Interestingly, the company was founded in 2020 as a mining firm before it rebranded in late 2024 to become a hydrogen developer.

This fact alone is something that displays the growing significance of hydrogen, which causes companies to neglect their initial objectives. Primary hydrogen has undoubtedly made a strategic decision to become affiliated with one of the world’s largest energy markets, which is the United States.

Unpacking Primary Hydrogen’s decision to expand into the U.S. hydrogen market

The energy industry has been buzzing ever since Primary Hydrogen Corp. revealed plans to broaden its development pipeline in the United States through the acquisition of the Dove Creek hydrogen project in Colorado.

Not only is the news massive for the United States’ renewable energy generation, but for the company itself as it represents its first major asset in the United States.

The Canadian-based corporation has been strategically navigating the energy sector and is only keen on investing in regions that have suitable geological conditions for naturally occurring hydrogen. As such, it is not a coincidence that it has now expanded to Colorado. Yet some people might wonder how exactly the deal was finalized.

Unveiling how the Canadian-based entity broadened its development pipeline

Unbeknownst to many people, energy projects do not just materialize over one or two years when construction begins. Instead, there is a drawn-out and meticulous process that developers go through before reaching the final decision. This was the case in this instance, as the company has been assessing multiple prospects across the U.S.

Colorado was deemed to possess great hydrogen generation potential because the company concluded that it had the required three elements: a hydrogen source, suitable reservoirs where the gas can accumulate, and geological seals that prevent it from escaping.

Thanks to the company’s expansion to the United States, it has access to one of North America’s largest potential markets for emerging hydrogen resources.

Reviewing the overall importance of the Dove Creek project

The Dove Creek project is located in southwestern Colorado near the Utah border, within the Paradox Basin and close to other well-known geological basins, including the San Juan Basin and the Uinta-Piceance Basin.

These formations are the ones that companies typically explore for natural hydrogen. According to the scientific experts who conducted research in this project, hydrogen in this region may form through radiolysis. This is a natural process in which radiation from uranium-rich basement rocks splits water molecules, generating hydrogen gas.

As of now, the Dove Creek consists of roughly 744 acres of mineral claims established by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. As hydrogen continues to grow in relevance, more and more companies will begin to take advantage of the region. Although China is the standalone leading hydrogen-producing country, the United States is clearly making an effort to reduce the significant gap.
