Companies that are able to execute projects in a variety of countries increase their brand name and their chances of being appointed to spearhead multiple groundbreaking projects simultaneously. This explains why energy companies have been showing a desire to expand internationally during the clean energy transition. The hydrogen energy sector is going through an exciting period where companies can execute their ambitious ideas mainly because of the integration of technology and the way that science has advanced within the sector. On that note, Nel adds another $7 million in submarine electrolyzer orders spanning U.S., U.K., and French programs, widening its footprint across allied naval fleets.

Nel ASA as a hydrogen energy producing powerhouse in Europe

The European continent has displayed great solidarity during the clean energy transition as companies are pursuing initiatives within different European nations. Norway has positioned itself as a hydrogen-producing leader, which generally means that the nation possesses a variety of companies that are competing to be the recognized leader of the nation.

Nel ASA has a history tracing back to 1927 and is today seen as a leading pure-play hydrogen technology company with a global presence. The company’s longevity is a testament to its ability to adapt to the newest methods of project execution instead of remaining stuck in the conventional way of doing things.

Nel adds another $7 million in submarine electrolyzer orders spanning the U.S., U.K. and France

Nel ASA has been very active as 2026 comes to an end. The company is showing a willingness to achieve its clean energy targets that it had set at the beginning of the year. Over the years, Nel ASA has become well-respected for specializing in renewable hydrogen production using water electrolysis.

According to a press release from Nel Hydrogen, the company was able to secure additional purchase orders from Collins Aerospace for PEM electrolyzer stacks that are used in submarine life-support systems. In aggregate, the newly received orders related to the U.S., U.K., and French naval programs have a value of an estimated USD 7 million.

Together with the USD 12 million purchase order that was announced on September 29, 2026, and additional orders that were received in early October, Nel’s submarine-related order intake from Collins Aerospace reaches an estimated USD 20 million.

All orders are set to be booked as order intake in the third quarter of 2026. Deliveries that are made under additional orders are expected during 2027 and 2028. The stacks will be manufactured at Nel’s facility in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Breaking down Norway’s hydrogen energy landscape as of 2026

It is interesting to note that a Norway-based company is deciding to pursue an initiative in the United States at a time when industry experts within the nation are calling for local representation. Norway’s hydrogen landscape centers on scaling green and blue hydrogen production, targeting maritime transport, and supplying clean energy to European markets.

Among the country’s key developments is the NORHyWAY Hydrogen Valley, which is backed by Horizon Europe and coordinated by RENERGY and SINTEF. The major initiative is one that stretches from Slagentangen to Hammerfest and represents a mega-money investment.

Nel ASA set to be at the center of future hydrogen energy initiatives

The company has achieved massive milestones in 2026, and there are expectations for it to carry on that momentum into 2027. Following the announcement, Nel’s Chief Commercial Officer, Todd Cartwright, stated:

“These additional orders extend our work across several submarine programs and demonstrate continued demand for our PEM technology. Submarine life-support systems impose demanding requirements for reliability and product lifetime. Our operating track record and established manufacturing capabilities position us well to serve this specialized market.”

Nel ASA specializes in PEM and alkaline electrolyzer technology for the production of renewable hydrogen and is headquartered in Oslo, Norway. Its product offerings foster a green hydrogen economy, making it possible to decarbonize various industries such as transportation, refining, steel, and ammonia.
