The undeniable truth that the global energy market is changing has become as clear as the sky in recent years. The vast majority of nations around the world are turning to the renewable energy sector as decarbonization becomes a top priority. One resource that can accelerate the clean energy ambitions of the world is hydrogen. The often-overlooked energy resource has experienced a revolution as several nations outline plans to develop hydrogen power infrastructure. OMV has revealed that its 140 MW green hydrogen facility in Lower Austria has been given the green light to begin operations.

Europe’s hydrogen ambitions have been boosted by a new joint venture in Austria

OMV, an Austrian energy company, and Masdar, the UAE-based company that has developed operations across the world, have recently launched a new joint venture to develop a 140 MW green hydrogen facility in Lower Austria.

The pair of companies signed a binding agreement to develop the joint venture at the ADIPEC conference and exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which was attended by the who’s who of the energy industry.

The 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, will become one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen production facilities once complete, and sets Austria up to become a regional hub for hydrogen production. This announcement marks OMV’s commitment to decarbonizing its Schwechat refinery.

The pair of companies noted that construction of the green hydrogen facility in Bruck an der Leitha has already commenced, and that they expect the facility to be fully operational by 2027 at the latest. The new joint venture will be majority-owned by OMV, with Masdar holding the remaining 49%.

“We can only secure jobs and prosperity in Austria if we stand firmly for open trade and build successful international partnerships. Together with strategic partnership between OMV and Masdar, we have brought one of the largest direct investments of recent years to Austria.” – Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of Austria

The project builds on OMV’s already impressive 10 MW electrolyzer plant in Schwechat

OMV’s presence in its home nation of Austria has led the company to become the dominant energy force in the European energy market. The new partnership with Masdar lays the foundation for a cooperative relationship to explore the potential of green hydrogen in Europe.

OMV and Masdar have also noted that the plan is for the new joint venture to be set up in early 2026, following the final documentation being signed, as well as receiving shareholders’ and regulatory approvals. The project could become an exemplar of how to successfully transition to renewable energy production.

“OMV and Masdar are jointly constructing the fifth-largest hydrogen plant in Europe – right here in Austria. This project further strengthens Austria’s leading role in a key technology of the future. Our goal is clear: Austria aims to become Europe’s leading hydrogen hub. – Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of Austria

As other European nations follow suit and approve new and astonishing hydrogen projects, Europe’s proclivity for hydrogen has become all too evident in recent months.

Hydrogen is gaining momentum around the world, with one exception

The world has seen the momentum of the hydrogen sector growing in recent years as a litany of nations turn to the most abundant element in the known universe to provide a new energy future. However, the United States has seen a massive hydrogen project in California being halted as the federal government has rolled back funding for the project. Thanks to the new joint venture established by OMV and Masdar, Austria will potentially become a hub for hydrogen production in Europe, setting the stage for an energy evolution on the European continent.
